Interior Overhaul...

I'm going to buy a G3 4Runner. My thing...I like cars to have a really nice and clean interior. I could give a rat's a** about the exterior.

So, I figure I can save some money and buy a mechanically sound car that's been parked outside for 15 years, and refurbish the interior.

What are some tips or best practices for this? Re-cover seats...new carpets...new dash? Door panels?

Any advice (and budget estimates) greatly appreciated.

Most of us here are the opposite way, we like the outward appearance and a clean stock interior is just fine. There's not a whole lot of stuff here other than some seat covers and replacing carpets. Keep us posted on what you do.

Wet Okele seat covers, custom paint any interior dash trim to match. Swap all lamps to LEDs, swap factory stereo to touch screen/NAV, custom gages... the list can go on...

If you have fabrication skills I recommend the scion xb seats in the front, then put some leds in the dome lights, pressure wash the seat belts and scrub down any surfaces where grime has built up. you can also gett husky liners to replace the floor mats. perhaps a better stereo with a screen.

I'm planning on gutting the interior this fall and power washing the carpet, cleaning the head liner, and getting rid of the plastiwood trim.

Replace carpet (apply sound deadening while its out), change the interior lights to LEDs of your preferred color, wet Okole covers then all the usual stereo and stuff. Maybe considering taking the trim out and giving it a nice high gloss black paint or something.

I am the same way, there is something comforting about having an interior that is nice.
The first things that come to my mind when I am looking at my interior are

Door panels-clean, complete, no broken plastic etc

Seats-Clean, rip free and OEM. I am not a fan of any sort of covers. Look for some clean oem seats.

Carpet-clean, don't paint it, look for replacement if necessary and get some good floor mats

Dash- get a pad on there, replace any broken bits, please do not paint anything some weird colors. lol.

Headliner-clean and replace if necessary with oem replacement.

Trim-clean and replace as necessary.



Those are some of the things I look for. I am a fan of a clean stock interior with some upgrades. I am not a fan of seat covers, for the price people pay for these nice seat covers you can find a nice pair of replacement seats or seat skins easily.

The easiest thing is to find one that doesn't have a trashed interior, instead of just jumping at anything that comes along. There are plenty out there that are mechanically sound and aren't trashed interior or exterior.

Yuck. No way a p/w was going to restore my 15 year-old carpet. A new one from stockinteriors.com made all the difference and cost less than a pair of wet Okoles. I went from oak to Jade Green like the outside. I love it. Their mats are a good deal, too.

We're in the prime for 3rd gens in junkyards, I've seen countless 4runners in junkyards with absolutely flawless interiors, and most yards will cut you a deal if you want to completely gut it.
