Intermittent no start

97 4runner with intermittent starting issue. Happens infrequently, but still an issue. Symptoms: cranks fine, power to fuel pump, spark is present. Timing belts are spot on. I am wondering if cam sensor will cause such an issue. Any help is appreciated.

I once drove 70 miles with CEL. After coming home, I saw the cam sensor was just hanging from the wire. It starts just fine without the cam sensor in place... So I am positive it is not your cam sensor.

If you have fire tot he plugs, that rules out the cam and crank sensors. I had this exact problem a month ago. The plug on top of the fuel pump (under the seat) was just not sitting down snug. It would even cut off while driving. Removed it and popped it back on and it started right up. No problems since.

also- these fuel pumps only get power during starting cycle and when running. They do NOT prime.

How long does it turn over before it starts? These pumps also get weak and a sign of needing a new one is a long cranking cycle.

Good luck

This happened a few weeks ago, waited a bit and it started like normal. Not extended crank. It happened again a few days ago, and would not start for 2 days, thn started normally this morning.
Thanks for reply.

I had a long cranking cycle and it disappeared after cleaning the mass air flow sensor.
