intermittent starting problem

ok, this is driving me nuts. 87, 22re, new starter, battery, and alternator. now, the problem is so intermittent that i can't quite figure out when its going to happen, hopefully it has happened to someone else who solved it. three times since i got my truck, it has refused to start. twice after driving maybe a mile, once after driving around town running errands for an hour or so. totally different situations. when it happens, i have power but no cranking at all. dash lights and voltage but no clicking, whirring, winding, nothing. now after it sits awhile (between 5 and 30 minutes) it starts. i dont know if this sounds vague at all, but the problem is as well. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. if anyone needs me, i'll be reading and re-reading every manual and book on 4runners i have.....

thanks, im gonna try that tomorrow. i've cleaned the terminals but havent checked up inside the insulation.

so i checked the cables and everything looks ok. the problem happened again yesterday, after about an hour and a half it started and ran fine. i did notice though, when it didnt want to start, there was a small click noise coming from the engine control box under passenger side dash everytime key was turned.
