Internet TV

I am thinking about kicking cable to the curb because it has gotten so expensive. We already have Netflix so I can pick up FX, AMC, HBO, and other premium network series a few months after they have viewed. We can get CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC over the air in HD. I am looking at some internet TV setups and I am curious if anybody on here has used them. A friend recomended PlayOn which is $39 per year to get ESPN shows (I am addicted to PTI) and ESPN3 games. Any thoughts on this stuff?

I think Hulu is or will offer a subscription based service for $10/mo.

Some free ones I've used before are justin.tv and surfthechannel.com

Much as well all hate the cable monopoly machine and the way we get totally hosed on our ever-increasing monthly bills, I don't see Comcast going down for the count anytime soon.

It'd be nice to eliminate paying through the nose for 250+ channels we seldom ever watch, but it's kind of hard to get true, reliable high-speed Internet without cable. Maybe the "wireless" options for broadband will improve in quality and decrease in price - and then cutting the cable might be worthy of consideration.

P.S. I have heard of "Clear Wire" - which is available here; but I doubt that their connection speed will be anything close to that of a cable modem or "WiFi" in one's home or business.

Jeff, I agree. For me, the only other choice I would consider is FiOS. But FiOS is not and will never be in my market due to telco arrangements and I'm AT&T's market. Satellite TV and AT&T's U-Verse aren't options for me because I have too many TVs through out the house and it'll be a huge bill just for the STB rentals. At least with cable, before they go all SDV, I still can get the lower band channels on the other TVs without having to rent the STBs or pay additional outlet fees. Also with Ceton's InfiniTV 4 finally shippnig, it'll be a much better solution with Windows7 on a HTPC than any DVR setup.

I believe ClearWire is WiMax and they're a joint venture with Sprint. WiMax, IIRC, is suppose to be broadband for the "last mile". I haven't really looked into or kept up with WiMax. My laptop does support it though.

Virgin Mobile now offers a MiFi device, $40/mo with no contract. Great for traveling.
