Intruder's build and off road pics thread

When I first bought the 4Runner I never expected to do any modding, then I figured I'd only do a couple things to it, then it got out of control. Figured I'd start this thread with the evolution and to post my wheeling pics so I don't overwhelm the other thread all the time, especially since most of my pics have lots of non-5th gens in it.

Anyhow, here's a couple completely stock pics.

After my first trail run I got addicted right away and decided that a lift and bigger tires were needed. Luckily I had some stock options vesting so I installed an Overland Warehouse (Radflo) 2.0 kit.

Not a fan of the lift and stock tires look, so I upgraded to some 285/70/17 Duratracs the next day.

And that's how it stayed for a while.

The next mods came all at once. BajaRack flat utility rack, an ARB RTT, and BudBuilt skidplates and sliders.

What I noticed then was that with the skids and sliders I was tackling more difficult trails and obstacles. Unfortunately, this meant a lot of wear and tear on my bumpers, including ripping off the trim piece on my rear bumper and almost completely peeling off my front bumper when it snagged on a tree root. So this led to me ordering a bumper and winch. When I installed the skidplates and sliders, the extra weight had a significant effect on my front coilovers and my front sagged. Even after cranking down on the coils I never regained all the height I lost, so I knew with the steel bumper and winch there was no way the 2.0 shocks would handle even more weight.

So this spring the Icon extended travel coilovers, ARB bumper, and TJM 10,000 lb winch went on.

Now most people would stop there for one go, but I saw a set of wheels I really liked and they were limited editions, so I had to order a set. New wheels deserve new rubber, so a set of tires was also purchased. Thanks to Vin at SCS I'm sporting a set of Stealth 6 wheels in the matte silver finish that I wrapped in 285/70/17 Goodyear MTRs. I also added a pair of TJM X-Ray HID lights - one spot beam, and one wide beam.

So that's it for now, except of course for the North Star deep cycle battery sitting in the back of my truck. If it doesn't rain tonight I should get that swapped in.

Hah, thanks for the kind words everyone.

Latest mod is in, a North Star deep cycle battery to handle the power draw from the winch. The extra wires are for the winch and the wiring harness for the X-Ray lights.

what did you do with the rear bumper?

Seem to be going down the same road as you (no pun intended) and am having trouble with the rear bumper. Specifically, when coming over a big rock, unless I go waaaaaaay slow, it drops down onto the mud flap and then peels off the rear bumper cladding, breaking some tabs and gets expensive. Ideally, would get a steel bumper with tire carrier, but would also look at steel tubular under bumper protector (like sliders, on the rear!). Any suggestions?

I haven't done anything with my rear bumper other than rip the trim piece off and put a big dent in it on the driver's side. Friends of mine have the CBI on their 3rd gens and it's pretty solid.

Departure angle isn't the 5th gen's best friend. Get a steel rear bumper, anything else is a band aide. I'm in the same boat, both of my rear fenders and bumper are f'd up, just too cheap/broke to order a replacement.

damn the truck looks great. wheeling pics are badass as usual. FYI i hate you but love ur truck lol. we have NOTHING comparable down here. Screw the FJ Summit - i want to come to Canada for a off road trip.
