Inverted "Vee" bar on front bumpers

I have seen several aftermarket steel bumpers in threads with the inverted Vee shaped bar in front of the grill at about a 45° angle. What is the purpose/use of this bar other than making it difficult to park without destroying someone else's hood?

It's called a stinger.

It's suppose to keep you from flipping over forward when descending REALLY steep slopes.

Its called a stinger, and was originally meant for protecting the radiator in a rollover while providing a little bit ramp up with your skid plate to help to get up over obstacles. Now it has become a piece of swag for mall crawlers but a lot of real wheelers still use them.

Good for keeping brush and deer of your hood too.

The stinger bumper is used in conjunction with a winch. When the load starts pulling your truck instead of you and your winch pulling the load you can butt the stinger against a tree at an angle and feed the winch cable sideways with much better leverage. It's a very useful tool.

Sure, let's say you are pulling a vehicle stuck hard in a ditch out with your winch mounted stinger and your truck starts to slide...you can pull up next to a tree and put one edge of the stinger directly on the trunk at a 90 degree angle to whatever it is you are pulling. This keeps your vehicle from creeping towards it and gives you more leverage.

I think I get what you're saying. Use the bumper to butt up against a tree to 'anchor' the winching vehicle. I don't see any leverage advantage though.
Personally in those situations I would rather strap the vehicle to a tree at the tow hitch and maintain a straight pull for the winch. You loose lots of efficiency when the winch line is spooling in at an angle and moving over the side rollers or edge of a hawse.
