iPad for Navigation/tunes in the 5th Gen

I've seen several threads/posts talking about aftermarket NAV systems for 5th gens. Instead of going that route, I installed a RAM Mount for my Verizon Ipad2 and have been very pleased with it over the past couple of months. The mount attaches to the passenger seat bolt and is pretty stable (still moves some, but not enough to annoy me). I connect it via Bluetooth and play music, Nav commands, etc. through the stereo. I use MotionX for street Nav and a couple of topo apps for off-road navigation and it has met all of expectations.

Just figured some other guys might want to go this direction. Since my iPad is basically an appendage at thus point, it was a no-brained to mount it in the truck!

Lookin good, I have been thinking along the same lines, I guess it would fit in the glovebox and I could use it as an ipod connected to the USB port and pull it out when I need internet or navigation.

It actually fits nice and snug in the stretchy band thingy in the glove. And yes, that's the official term in the owners manual.

I see the white Apple cord running...somewhere? Is it plugged into center console for power er what?

I have the same Ram Mount in my Limited. I have had it now for over 9 months with zero issues. Even though I have factory Nav, I prefer to use the iPad for finding new destinations. I feel it does a better job and with less hassle (no messing around with "zones" or having to only input somewhere while I am stopped). The iPad also does a great job of showing traffic on my route. So much better than the factory Nav, that I canceled my XM-Nav on the truck. It's also great for streaming movies over all the (15) speakers via bluetooth (for my passengers of course :wow. I get more use out of my iPad now then I ever have. My only advice if you go this route are two things:

1.) Keep a power cord in the truck for the iPad. You will use it more than you think (traffic, movies, music, ect) and while the iPad has a great battery, it will run down.
2.) Take the iPad out of it's cradle when parking somewhere long term. It literally snaps out in two seconds and can be slid into the front seat rear pocket for safe keeping. You don't need to give any thieves any more reason to break into your 4Runner than they may already have. :AK47:

The cord is going into the center console AC outlet. You could also use the USB in the glove box. I also remove the iPad whenever I am not in the truck, it either goes with me or goes in the glovebox, even running in a store for 5 mins...don't want give someone that kind of temptation.

Which part of the dash would you suggest? Or better said, which part of the dash would you discard in order to fit an Ipad in there? :naughty:

How about a custom dash face that takes the two A/C or heat vents, spreads them out and places them vertically rather than horizontally, such that the iPad can be mounted in the center??? (the iPad also being mounted vertically, covering or replacing the radio faceplate, since I'm sure we could make an app for that!)

I dont know. Lot's of work for that one. I think the mount described by the OP would be much easier. The above post with the Subaru mount is pretty cool. Not sure if we would get away with something like there here.

Yes, but it only works with Subaru Imprezas as this point. I'm sure the base design could be adapted to other models, but it would be a lot of leg work.

The only problem with this type of Sat Nav is that is reliant on having cell coverage. Depending on how "off road" you go and lose cell coverage your fooked. Box canyons,mountains desert places like that.

This. And I hear the Bad Elf unit is quite impressive as far as locking on and accuracy. Thinking about getting one.

True......BUT......you NEED cell service to be able to show you a map of where your GPS says you are......UNLESS you have maps stored (preloaded) on the device you are using and not reliant on the network to get them.
