iPad for Navigation/tunes in the 5th Gen

Great idea! So, I totally copied you. I just received and installed my RAM Mount for iPad and loaded MotionX.

Awesome setup. I drive a lot of highway miles for work. So, this will be a great application. Thanks for the idea.

I'd take pictures...but they would be indiscernible from yours!

I've seen several threads/posts talking about aftermarket NAV systems for 5th gens. Instead of going that route, I installed a RAM Mount for my Verizon Ipad2 and have been very pleased with it over the past couple of months. The mount attaches to the passenger seat bolt and is pretty stable (still moves some, but not enough to annoy me). I connect it via Bluetooth and play music, Nav commands, etc. through the stereo. I use MotionX for street Nav and a couple of topo apps for off-road navigation and it has met all of expectations.

Just figured some other guys might want to go this direction. Since my iPad is basically an appendage at thus point, it was a no-brained to mount it in the truck!

That's the exact setup I run for trips as well. Love it.

EDIT: Joneseyy -- you mentioned you use Motion-X for street nav, so I assume you're using Motion-X Drive? Have you tried Motion-X HD? If not, I HIGHLY recommend it for topo maps and offline navigation.

I'll have to check out HD...Super pleased with the Street Nav.

Also, since my first post, there is another, probably better Ram mount out there, the Tab-Tite that I think will be an improvement over my current setup. Just ordered it, will let you guys know.

I went back to the apple store and exchanged my iPad 3 for the iPad 4 with GPS chip and ATT yesterday and downloaded the Motion X HD last night. It is on sale right now for only $1.99. It is pretty cool, I am still trying to learn how to download the maps I want.

I did download a couple and it was screaming fast with wi-fi, so I dont know what the concern was on it. Now, I just have to get the mount and I am all set. My skids should be here in the next week or two and my bumper is on it's way as well. Shrockworks is really an awesome vendor.

You mean iPad2 for iPad3? There is no iPad4.

This thread has me thinking I want to use that old metra dash kit and see if I can't create an ipad interface. Might be an interesting project. Some of the youtube videos make for some great ideas.

Ifany one is really familiar with the Motion-X HD, let me know because I am struggling with it. I am trying to put together a trip from highway 59 outside of Walsenberg CO through Medano pass. I was able to set the waypoints no problem, then what I would like to do is save this route so I can access it later when I am away from Wi-Fi. I know it can work, I just dont know how to make it happen. Or better yet, if there is a way to set the route from one point to another and then drag and change the route that the system plots to suit my needs.

I have thrown this idea around as well. I need something to do with my original iPad...not sure I want to go cutting the dash apart yet though...

Let us know what you decide! There are definitely some cool examples of people who have done this. I saw a video of a custom shop that installed one in a newer tacoma I believe. VERY clean. Ill see if I can find the video.

I purchased the TomTom app for offline navigation. It was pricey at $39.99 but I absolutely love it. It has some great routing options and the maps are stored on the device... I'll have to check out Motion-X HD for a comparison.

The TomTom app almost always chooses a faster/better route than the factory JBL NAV.

Yeah, I just tried MotionX HD today on the trail and it worked great. When you zoom in on the map you can see a couple places where we stopped to play in some big ruts too. Love the summary with the total distance, average speed, and altitudes as well. Definitely worth the couple bucks it cost on the iTunes store.
