iPhone Sync Issues

All,
I have a 5th Gen T4R (SR5) and for better or worse I just got the verizon iPhone and I was all excited to plug it into my 2010 T4R on a recent trip to listen to my itunes and the BT system came on and started barking all these commands. I looked at the owner's manual and it just says to use the iphone cable and plug into the USB in the glove box and then hit AUX. I wish it was that easy. When I hit AUX all hell broke loose. Granted my tech savvy is terrible but is it seriously this difficult to use and iPhone in a 5th Gen T4R???

Any help would be great,

If you got the Blue Tooth radio option you do not need to use the cable. You do need to “Pair” the phone with the radio though. Look up “Pairing” or “Blue Tooth” in the manual. If you dont get there let me know and I can garb my manual and walk you through it.

Its great once its paired. All you have to do is jump in the car, and if you have your phone on you, hit Aux and your iTunes will start playing where it left off (Unless you have power cycled your iPhone. In that case it starts from the beginning of the playlist again. Thats a unfortunate iPhone flaw IMHO.)
 
You should be able to use the USB cable into the USB port in the glove box as well. With that the track names and artist info will show up on the radio. It is painfully slow to browse through the songs though.

The BT is better, but still pretty flaky. It usually works well for a few weeks then randomly doesn't see the phone. But when it works, it works well.
 
Wow I guess our limited Head units are alot better than the sr5 and trail radios. Ive had my Limited since July and Paired it (3gs) the day I picked it up and have not had to do it again. The phone pairs and BT plays everytime without any problems.
 
Bluetooth vs. Usb

Yea so the streaming is the best ever! But sometimes it says it's not connected? WTF I turn the truck off wait a sec, them turn it back on and walah! it's working and streaming perfectly. Go figure. Probably an iPhone flaw as there are a few. Pandora app works too! Even able to scroll right to the next track from steering wheel controls.
As far as the iPod USB hook up is... Man damn! Is all I can come up with. My Tacoma and tundra had the same issue. Your scrolling through to find the next artist or track and if you wait a short second it accepts the artist you briefly paused on as the one you want. I know if you push in the scroll wheel it selects the track/artist so why does it select the track/artist when briefly on the name? Gosh this I a B! Especially when driving. I've had nothing but GREAT luck on the flash drivers rather than iPod's cause if you hold right or left on steering wheel it goes to the next folder on you drive. You have way much mor control over your music. Names and all the track info is still on there. Create your own folder/playlist and have a ball.

Lobsterguy, do you have the regular radio or the nav?

Mtn.rush, it's not an issue of what model, it's the radio that's in the truck. If you have a limited with nav, my trail has the same unit.

If the bluetooth streaming is acting up, click on settings, general, bluetooth, and under devices, click on "car multi-media"... Don't click on the blue arrow, though. This should make the bluetooth actively look for your T4R. It works better than turning the truck on and off.

I have 2 AT&T iPhone 4s connected to my T4R. They work really, really well now that the steering wheel controls do next and previous track. Also, hold the home button to trigger voice command, and you can tell it to play songs by artist or album, turn on shuffle, dial name, etc. It is really much better than using the somewhat awkward voice control buttons on the 4Runner.

Finally, when you have your phone connected as an audio player, you can hit the off-hook button to get into the various bluetooth menus. If you hit the "talk" button on the steering wheel, it tries to kick you into an audio player setup menu.

Correct, that's what i was getting at. Seems the nav option doesn't have these problems.
 
Hey guys,

I have an Ipod touch, and am having similar issues. 2010 trail w/ Nav. I always leave my Ipod plugged into the glove box usb drive. Sometimes it jumps right back in to where I left off (upon start-up of the vehicle), sometimes the radio will not be able to read it and prompt me to address connection issues. It is really wierd. Perhaps I will have to try the Bluetooth route.

I have done the bluetooth multimedia route with my Sprint HTC Evo and it was not the same sound quality as plugging it in directly thru the aux jack.

Am I missing something here?

+1 mine as well. I haven't had to pair it since. I did, however, have to change the BLUE TOOTH pairing code for the PORTABLE music player to match the same code as the phone pairing code so that they would play nicely. I found it odd that to pair the phone was one code, and music player the other. Once I set the pairing code to the same for both, it worked beautifully. It works very well in my limited also, but I do have the GPS NAV unit which seems to do this 10x better than the other head units.
 
off topic: anyone know how to use the Nav unit's voice recognition audio controls? every time i try all i get is "that command is not supported in this mode". wtf? :shrug:

It will not sync. It is best to use the iphone's voice control feature. Hold the home button for 3 seconds and say "Dial John Doe". It uses the 4Runner's mic and works like a charm.
 
woah. I had no idea i could stream from my iPhone to my car via bluetooth. That is pretty effing sweet. I haven't even looked in the glove box yet. I just thought the "aux'" input was for a mini jack. But wireless? I'm uber impressed.

I'll have to finally pair my phone to my car. I've just been busy with work and stuff.

I works really, really well. I'm to the point that I never even bring my iPod into the car to connect via USB because I have more space on my iPhone and I can steam Pandora and XM radio over it. Next and previous track buttons on the steering wheel allow you to skip songs, too.

after the gym today i paired my iPhone to my car. It was simple. Took about 4 seconds. Very cool.

I saw in the glovebox a usb port, i'm asssuming i have to use my iPhone cable to make that work? I doubt my 4runner came with one, is that correct?

Thats pretty cool about the next and volume up, i'll have to check it out.
