iPod Dock

Finally I found a perfect place in my runner to have a dock for the iPod. I modified the iPod dock and connected the PIE adapter from the stereo and the firewire power cord to the 120v outlet in the center consol. Here are some pics...

LMK what you guys think...

Awesome looking mount!

Can you provide us with more details on how you made it and what was involved?

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I did several 'trial and error' attempts to get the angle then took it into the computer and came up with the holder for the dock. I used museum board to construct the prototype and made sure it fit the little nook nicely.

After finishing the holder, I connected the PIE plug from under the console to the line-in on the dock and plugged the standard ipod charger to the outlet inside the center console.

Here's the diagram showing the whole setup..

Hmmm...

Have you thought about MAKING and SELLING these? ;):

I'm sure that there would be more than a few people interested.

Me for one! :D

It's called iGrip. That's where I put my cellphone in the car.

It can be had for $3 on ebay..

or $5 + tax in local stores..

It works quite well holding the cellphone and the ipod.

I am thinking of buying the black ones instead to match the interior tho.

Update..

Although the dock looks good and functions well, the buttons on my 3rd gen iPod are a little hard to get to.

I bought the iTop Button Relocator from NYKO and it works even better now.

Here are some shots..

It looks very clean and thought out.

However, my only concern is that since its located at the center console, that you will be looking down when you decide to change the song on your iPod. And If your driving at the same time, that could be a bad decision.

But, we all know our own driving abilities and attention capabilities, so that will be up to the ourselves the amount of risk such a task will take.

Thanks for the compliment.

I realize the ipod is not in the most logical viewing location but it is the best location without adding a holder and functions quite nicely.
I usually set the ipod to shuffle all the songs when driving and I just control using the botton relocator without looking down. I also try not to look at ipod when driving.

I might need to think of another place for my new 30GB iPod video when it comes cause the button relocator is not compatiable with the new iPod.

Definitely count me in if you plan to sell these. I want one!

Or, if you can come up with some detailed instructions on how to make them, that would rock too.

One question...did you hardwire the power source to the 4Runner? How did you do that?
