Pretty much tape adapter or FM tuner (those suck by the way)... had one and returned it. I used to have the tape adapter and it worked great until i finally decided to get an alpine headunit.

I use the tape adapter and it works great. I was going to drop the $$$ for a new head unit just so I could have an ipod hookup, but the more I thought about it, it just wasn't worth it when I could spend $20 for the tape adapter. I agree that the FM tuner deals suck it bad. Don't waste your money on one of those.

x2 on what Qyota said. A direct USB to head unit connection will give you the best quality. You can either get a new head unit or install an adapter.

i have a similar project that kellyj posted.
i have my wife's 2k 4runner stock radio/tape/cd in my '88 4runner.
you plug the device into your cd changer port.
when you want to listen to the ipod you push the cd button twice.
it works but you have to crank the volume on the ipod and the controls aren't that great.
don't get me wrong... it does allow you to listen to your ipod through the head unit but it's nothing like the newer ipod-ready headunits.
also, depending on which unit/product you get... you can do ipod and anything else that uses a stereo minijack/headphone jack.

I have a pretty cheap head unit (about a $200 Pioneer) and I bought the adapter for the back of the radio. I rerouted it through the e-brake handle area.
You just have to splice some connectors for the ipod to charge. It plugs either through the bottom or top. Bottom keeps it charged, the iPod's volume isn't active, it's all the radio. The other input, the 3.5mm jack, is for other stuff.

I have a Dension Ice-Link Ipod dock, they only make them for specific cars now adays...
but it runs to the back of the unit and is high quality,
the thing I love about it is that you can control the ipod and dont have to use the horrible deck controls for stuff like that.
only bad thing is that cuz apple changed from the 5 port dock to 6 port dock that it wont charge the newer ipods and iphones... but still, its great!
oh, and the sound is super good with my sub and system

Depends on your definition of 'cheap'. The USASPEC PA15-TOY works great in my '02 with the 6 disc unit. The adapter has two inputs, one dedicate iPod and one pair of RCA which can be pigtailed to a headphone plug that I feed an XM receiver into.
The device can be had for about $120via Amazon.

I have this too, and it's a great option if you don't want to ditch your stock HU.
Deep_palancar - which XM unit to you have hooked into it? I have XM in my other car and in the house and have been looking to get it in the runner. So your're running an RCA to 3.5mm cable from the ipod adaptor that runs to the XM receiver? I hate the FM receiver option for them. I had one for my ipod way back and they suck!
Pretty easy, actually. Even easier if you have a magnetic screwdriver so you don't have the trim panel screws fall down and behind stuff where it's really dark and hard to find them *facepalm*. Remember that if you get a wiring harness adapter, it plugs into the wiring that goes into the factory amp, not the wiring that comes out of the factory amp into the head unit. Found this out after I had put the whole thing back together and called Crutchfield customer service. Oops.

If you purchase a HU from Crutchfield, they supply installation and wiring instructions along with an adapter harness to your stock connectors. They provide step-by-step removal and installation instructions and all the information you need to patch the HU into your stock harness w/o hacking up your stock harness whatsoever.

I think it's funny other people got confused the same as I did when I saw that 20 pin connector plugged into the factory unit from the factory amp and realized my wiring harness would definitely not work
I have been doing stereo install on all my vehicles since I was 15 and felt pretty stupid after finally deciding to remove the amp and see what wiring harness went into it...which were the ones I needed to plug in the wiring harness adapter--very simple :reddance:So, to answer the OP's original question about adding an aux function to the stock headunit, DO NOT PURCHASE THE PIE TOY-AUX ADAPTER!! Whatever you do, dont get that POS! It is terrible...produces awful quality and causes speakers to fuzz from the ambient vehicle noise while driving, especially if the volume is up at all (more volume needed, more gain provided, more electrical noise through speakers). I figured Id save a little money on a head unit when I bought my T4R and just purchase the adapter, as I had put my Pioneer Premier head unit in my ladyfriend's car when her stock radio died right about the time I sold my Z71--leaving me with no aftermarket radio but a happy girlfriend:naughty: Haha! Anyway, that PIE adapter is absolute crap...don't buy it. I ended up returning it and bought my girl a less expensive Pioneer for her car and took mine back. It's so worth the money to upgrade to aftermarket radio and very easy to self-install. Just search the forums on here and YT, there's several writeups. 4runners.org has one as well...

Someone mentioned shitty ipod controls in most aftermarket HUs...and mostly they are right. However, the new breed of Pioneer AVH's have it down! The ipod/iphone control on my avh-p4200dvd is really good. Better than using the device itself sometimes.
I'm working on getting my ipod/iphone mounted in the top part of the arm rest, with the cable on a swivel near the hinge. Keeps it out of sight (device and wires), yet more accessible than the glovebox.
