I am glad you posted this. I have been thinking about getting an ipod for use in my truck and had thought about getting the FM modulator. What is it you don't like about it?
My brother had his '03 Maxima wired where he has an input plug in the console for his mp3 player. I don't know what kind his is, but it doesn't really matter.
I'll be interested to hear anybody's thought on the ipod.

the clarity isnt great with the transmiter. i get a lot of static, and i am in fairbanks alaska where there are plenty of open stations to use.
i also dont like using the fm transmitter because you have to adjust the volume manually on the ipod and receiver. i used my ipod at home and the sound alsways sounds much better when you can plug in via the dock, and there are no volume control issues.
i would like to do a custom install where the dock is mounted in the centerconsole. i havent taked the stock hu out yet, so i am curious as to if there are inputs in the back of it. i dont see any aux controls on the front of the deck.

I was just now trying to figure out a way to connect an iPod to the head unit I am about to install in my truck.
The pocket under the HU in the Metra kit isn't quite tall enough. Might have to make a mount that pokes out from there. Perhaps a goose neck arm or some such.
I have never connected an iPod to a stereo. Nice to hear it works well.

Never did get an answer from anyone desiring to use the IPOD with NAV.
Does anyone know if output jacks are on the NAV head unit (rear)?
...OR is the only option FM Transmitters?

the eaisiest way to do this that I know of requires you to replace the head unit. Factory Toyota head units do not have aux inputs. I have a alpine deck with Ai net. This interface is the cable that connects the cd changer, XM tuner, DVD etc. There is an adaptor with AI net connectors on one end and rca's on the other. You could go directly in from the Head Unit. or daisy chain from a Changer, XM etc. But the chain will end with the rca's. Then go down to Radio shack get a mini headphone jack plug to go into Ipod and on other end of cable rca's plug in to AI adaptor, activate aux input on deck and you can enjoy stereo Ipod. I have done this with my wife's Ipod and I sounds really good compared to RF modulated adaptors
