i've been searching the forum and there is alot of info about how to install spark plugs and to use ngk plugs on the passenger side, denso plugs on drivers side. i was wondering about irridium plugs? do you think they would perform any better?

denso even has irridium plugs as an option for replacement of the stock plugs but they dont have the double electrodes. i was just wondering if anybody has tried them and how did it turn out.

Conventional wisdom, as absorbed from this forum, is that:
1. You don't need platinum plugs. The engine won't go faster or have more power with platinum. But...you'll spend more $$.
2. Double electrodes are a good idea with the wasted spark ignition system used on the 5VZE engine. Using single electrode plugs is asking for trouble.
3. The Denso on one side, NGK on the other side thing is purely an artifact of the original assembly in Japan. If you go to the dealer, they hand you Denso plugs in a Toyota box.

I use them. The forum consensus is correct though. I use the double ground as they do last longer then standard plugs. Are they worth their costs. Probably not. Will they last 100k Probably not due to the wasted spark system. :)

yea i was just curious, i pretty much stay OEM on replacement parts, but i did use irridium plugs recently on a 6 cyl ford pickup i have, just to try them out. i thought they might help create better combustion but i didnt notice any difference.

Iridium plugs are awesome especially when an application is prone to fouling like an air compressor or a snowmobile. My favorite anti foul plug by far.

That said I have no idea how they perform in a 5VZ. I’m sure there awesome. I used the dual electrode denso platinum the last go.

Dual electrode + platinum plugs check all the boxes, just a bit costly. I change my plugs every 2 years, just before our bi-yearly CA smog check. I like seeing the condition of the plugs after 2 years as a diagnostic data point.

Us supercharged 3.4 folks tend to run the “colder” spark plugs (IK24? IK22?) anyway, they are single electrode and work just fine. Albeit, not going to last as long as stock but when it’s supercharged it technically becomes “high performance” and therefore requires extra attention and maintenance.

With all the money we throw at bumpers/winches/tires/king shocks/led lights/dual transfer cases/CB radios/on board air compressors/mapping software/roof racks with ladders/slide out drawer systems/awnings/swing out tire carriers/secondary fuel tanks/dual batteries.... I think most folks can squeeze an extra $100 in the budget to get and/or test fancy spark plugs.

I agree 100%. In the grand scheme the price of the plugs is literally nothing.

The last time I went to buy a iridiums for one of my snowmobile’s, which they all run iridiums by the way, The parts guy in NAPA got all sheepish and said they’re like $18 a plug. I told him that I didn’t care how much the plugs cost and if they were $100 a plug I would still buy them. My experience has been they are the only plugs outside of EYA Ngks that when the motor gets flooded from me rolling the prick in deep ass snow they start immediately back up without drama. Easily worth the money. Probably worth 10 times the money.

The fairly young parts guy that sold me these Denso platinum‘s for the yota got all sheepish about it too and said man these are expensive part spark plugs. Again, I told him I didn’t care. A good set of plugs and wires is the price of what, two tanks of gas now? If that’s going to tip you over, break the budget and push you into the bankruptcy category then there are much bigger problems that need to be addressed. You probably need to sell the car and a lot of other garbage in your life, but that’s a separate conversation.

Moral of the story is buy good parts. They’re a tremendous value. Value equals happiness, not cheapness.

As a side conversation, I see quite a few super pimped out rigs in my town that are built for the Overland deluxe. I mean we’re talking the whole gamut, rooftop tents, brand new max tracks that have never been used bolted it on the side or top of a rig, all kinds of unused highlift jacks, just the works in general….. Two data points I’ve noticed in the last two years of 4Runner ownership. I have never seen any of these super kitted out rigs or raptors or gladiators or jeeps or 4runners in any of my travels on mountains or deserts anywhere in my immediate vicinity of 50 miles of this town. And none of them have any scratches………. So…… is everyone just flexin on curbs at the Dutch bros or whatever coffee places are in town, or does anyone actually go use any of these vehicles outside of being a daily driver car?????????

Not even kidding here…… I see more f150s and mini vans on p rated tires in the boonies and forest service (about 3k miles worth just the last few months, on weekends and the occasional during the week trip) probably than any of the gazillion purpose built off-roaders I see in my town daily. I’ve yet to see a raptor in the wild either….. Not that it matters, have fun everyone do what makes you happy. Just an observation I’ve had acrossed a good chunk of Idaho. The huge majority of people that spend all this money on accessories don’t actually seem to use any of them. Which is too bad, there’s a lot of cool stuff to see and experience in the world if you’re just willing to go do it.
