Is a fuse protecting against a bad trailer connections or short?

I’ll always hope to connect to a good boat or utility trailer’s electrical connector. Is a fuse protecting against a bad trailer connections or short? A shorted switch took out my 1993 Ford explorer that led me to this 07 T4R V6 SR5. The computerized controlled components have me on edge after my 15 years in the Explorer. I would hate to connect to a trailer wired bad or shorted and cause a major melt-down. I feel a meltdown occurred in the 1993 Explorer due to a bad ignition switch vs it blowing a fuse. Are the T4R safeguarded with fuses before much is blown? jow
