My girlfriend seems to think so. I love the way they look. Anytime I see a 4runner with a tough front bumper and a winch, I think, I want that. But there's a good chance I would literally never use it. Thoughts? I'm not a rich person, but a couple thousand wouldn't exactly break us, and I feel like I could make up for some of it on resale.
Is it absolutely stupid that I want to buy a winch just because it looks cool?

I wouldn't spend $2k on something for looks, but I did buy a TSO pro grille which was few hundred, so can't really say anything. I think you'll be in pretty good company around here for buying stuff because of the way it looks.
Modding is an addiction
I have a rooftop rack that suuucks down the MPG and highway speeds. But it looks cool as hell. The Winch and BIG bumper will weigh you down. Get a hybrid bumper with the synthetic line to save on weight and not have to upgrade your springs as well, but still get a winch. You're right you won't use it much. A good recovery strap is a better spend... but they don't look cool at all.

You won't make it up on resale. You rarely get what you pay for your upgrades. So, you do the upgrades for you. If you have the means, and it's not stupid financially in your situation, just do it. Life is short...

Absolutely not! Have you seen the ghetto crap people put on their rigs in here? I think a solid front bumper and winch are one of the most useful mods you can do. After my sliders get installed, I’m definitely going with a hybrid bumper and Warn 10k synthetic.

Hybrid is the way to go in my opinion. Saves a lot of weight too. I'm going with one of these 2. Still can't decide.

Certainly no one on this forum will judge you for doing it. Look at all the people who put 285s and sliders on their runners. Most will never be in a position where the extra 1/2” of height gained by the larger tires will yield any benefit nor will they be sliding down big rock ledges in their $40k+ rigs. You do you.

Winch is nice when you really need it, half the time you can't find something to winch off of...think reservoir bottom/ sand dunes.
Adds more weight = less MPG.
Front suspension needs to be addressed if you start adding more weight to the front.
A shovel and creative use of rocks and trees goes a long way.
Spend the money on good tires.
But hey I am not the one to say don't do it, you want the winch and the girl wont kill you, then do it, some times you just cant beat that winch!

And for only $800, maybe $1000-$1200 installed, seems like a great option.
Just put on new tires last week. Hopefully, the Cooper Discover AT3 4S qualify as good. I went for the passenger rated, but I am absolutely loving them so far. They are like velcro on rain. Nothing else I've owned has come close. I can't get them to hydroplane if I try.
