Is it bad to run 2 different sized wheels?

Hey guys I want to get some larger tires down the line but I commute in my truck and don't really want to take the mpg hit. Especially since I'm getting 12-13 right now on stock tires. I have a spare set of rims now and I was wondering if it would be bad for the transmission or gears if I run my normal tires during the week and some beefy off-road tires when I wheel. The two rims ill be running are the standard 5 spoke and 3 split spoke 4runner rims if that makes any difference. Any input appreciated. Thanks guys.

i thought about this the other day about mine. cars do it, big back and smaller front. so figured it applied all over. should be good to go.

That doesn't apply to his situation at all...


The only issue I can see is that if they're different size tires it may throw off your alignment.

For a day or two though, I don't think that's a very big deal, personally.

Actually, it doesn't apply all over. In 2WD it would be fine but in 4WD you're asking for a world of trouble. It would be the same as trying to run 2 different gear ratios front and back.

Anthony, To clarify. Your talking about swapping all four tires and wheels when you go wheeling. You will be fine to do that. running a bigger tire with stock gears won't hurt anything you will just not be able to go as slow as if you had the smaller tires. Don't however run one size on the front and another on the back. that is a no no

i know this to be true.... running two different size tires or smaller then stock tires will mess up your t-case and diffs

As Sam mentioned I am talking about swapping all 4 tires for commuting and off-roading. I'm gonna have some rake with the lift. No sense in running 2 different size tires at the same time.
