I've noticed it too. I think it has to do with the lack of rust. A TON of them are 2wd, even check the Austin Craigslist! There are a lot of 3rd gens with decent mileage. But they're mostly 2wd...
I'm sure people buy them for the reliability, and then they just last and last! Then they can hand them down to their kids and get a new one for themselves!

I remember back in high school my buddy wanted to get a used 4Runner for his first car. At the time I had no appreciation for what they really were, so I remember telling him it was a chick car because a handful of hot chicks at our school drove them, and to your point, the overwhelming number of 4Runners we saw on the streets were driven by women.
That was before the CUV craze, and my assumption was people needed a 4WD vehicle for our snowy winters, and men were more likely to get a full size pickup (brodozers are popular around here), whereas women who weren't soccer moms wanted a mid-size SUV. Similarly, I would also say that I see more women driving Wrangler Unlimiteds around here than men as well.

Pickup trucks have always been huge in Texas, especially since the mfgs. started dressing them up. Women like 'um.
Women in 4Runners is just an extension of this.

They're pretty popular around here too. Lots of 2wd versions, as people use them to tow boats. I don't see many lifted ones here though. Most of the offroad rigs I see here are Jeeps, full-sized pickups, or FJ Cruisers. I don't even think I've seen a TRD pro around here. Of course, I don't go to the mall much though ;-)

Same goes for up here in West TX (7 out of 10). But those 7 are Limited's and the rest are SR5s or Trails with minor (like me with only tires and little appearance stuff) to major mods. I would also say the same for Jeep Wranglers, too. But this is a weird area in that there is tons of oil money, so 50% of the Ford Raptors I see are driven by high school kids. 98% of the pure kid haulers here are Denali Yukons, Expedition XLs, and big Infinity SUVs.

Also to bring to note: At least 75% of the women that drive 4runners are pleasant to look at. Just something I have noticed.
No not just Austin. Here in the PNW, Portland specifically, not joking, probably 4 out of 10 vehicles on the road are Toyotas, mostly Tacomas and 4runners. My neighbor across the street has two, 85 and a 97, his wife drives the 97, factory locker. I have one, there's a guy around the corner that goes through FJs like they're socks, another buddy down the street had two 2nd gen 4runners, sold one and got a Samurai. They're all over the place here. Out on the road I see tons of 4runners driven by women, I can't wait to get mine lifted and put some tires on it to differentiate from them honestly.
