is it ok to switch to amsoil for diffs & transfer case?

at 8500 miles is it ok to change the fluids to amsoil for transfer case, diffs and all that? an old friend who is a mechanic suggested so.

I just think that 12,000 miles would be better because you have so few miles on the vehicle, and the gears are still wearing in producing metal chips. Might as well let it break in a bit more before going with a good synthetic. From what I understand after 12,000 miles metal chips from the differential gears drop off significantly.

I never worry about gears breaking-in. Rings yes, gears no. Get rid of the old stuff after 1,000 miles. Plenty of time for any debris to drop to the bottom.

Red Line Shockproof, or Amsoil Severe Gear are my two favorites.

I've got 53K miles on my 4runner. Would it be acceptable to move over to full synthetic at the 60K inverval, or should I just stick with conventional oils?

You can go to synthetic any time you want. It will not hurt any thing. I only suggested waiting 12,000 miles so that most of the metal particles from the new gears would be worn in. No reason to crap up expensive synthetic with brand new gears still wearing in.

I had a 98 Tacoma V-6 with the manual tranny that I completely switched over to Amsoil at 101,000 miles. (engine, tranny, xfer case, & both diffs) I ended up gaining 1-2 mpg but, I really noticed the difference in the winter. When I first started the truck on brisk 0-20 degree F mornings it used to feel like I had pudding in my gearbox while running conventional gear oil. The Amsoil felt smooth and fluid all year long. It was nice to have a 25k oil change interval as well, a bit of clever timing and I never had to climb under the truck in the winter at all. Bonus.

The truck never burned or leaked any oil for the next 85,000 miles...right up until I hit the telephone pole....ouch

will someone help me out and let me know the name/brand and type of oil that i need to do my front/rear diff's & what else do I do.

I do my own oil change with castrol 5w30 and toyota filter.

& another question

I'm currently checking on the AMSOIL web site to purchase what i need, thoes the front/rear diff & the transfer case take the same 75w 90 synthetic long life gear lube, or is there a diferent lube i need for the transfer case ....... I really thank you all for all of your help .....

Personally, I would use the Severe Gear (SVG) 75W-90 in both diffs and the transfer case instead of the Long-Life or whatever it's called. I put the SVG in mine two weeks ago.

Also, you should go to your nearest dealer and get six new crush washers. My dealer's Parts Dept. screwed me because they didn't give me the proper crush washers. They gave me six of the exact same type of washers, but they only worked for the rear diff, so I flipped four of the old ones around and reused them. The transfer case washers are different, and so is at least one of the washers on the front diff.

There is another post on here with the actual part numbers of the washers you need.

You may want to purchase the gear lube pump from Amsoil as well, unless you can find one at your local parts store. Make sure you get one with a large diameter cap because Amsoil uses the wide-mouthed style bottle for the SVG.

Ok this is what I found, Severe gear SAE 75W-90 synthetic extreme pressure LUBRICANT. I need 3.2 pints for the front, 6.5 pints for the rear & 3.0 pints for the transfer case (do I use this same gear lube for the transfer case as well) so I need a total of 12.7 pints, is 1 pint = to 1 quart ??????
will this be all I need or will I need 13 quarts to do it all (front/rear dif & transfer case)

I believe you will need a total of 6.15 quarts, as there are two pints in one quart (add up all of the pints and divide by two). I purchased a total of seven quarts of the SVG 75W-90, and I have about three-quarters of a quart left, so I needed to buy all seven quarts.

You can use the same exact SVG 75W-90 in the rear and front diffs as well as the transfer case.

I signed up as an Amsoil "Preferred Customer" for six months, and it cost me $10. However, the price reduction I received as a preferred customer on the seven quarts of SVG and a Wix air filter that I also bought was more than $10, so it saved me money to pay for the $10 membership as a preferred customer.

You will need a 24 mm socket for the rear diff and transfer case plugs and a 10 mm hex key for the front diff plug. Make sure you open the fill plug before the drain plug just in case you can not get the fill plug open. I didn't have any trouble with that, though. It also helped to drop the spare tire to make some room to work near the rear diff.
