is it okay to purchase a 3rd gen with 200k miles or more? cause i need a 4wd and there are a bunch in my price range but im afraid when i see the miles is 200+.... i can find a nice jeep cherokee with 105k miles and 4wd for half the price of a yota.... so is that toyota being more reliable or cherokee's over saturating the market? thanks

I'd say go for the 4R. The Cherokee's 4.0 is a super solid motor, but pretty much everything else is just like any other Chrysler product: total junk. I just bought a 98 SR5 with 160k miles on it, and it feels way more solid than any Jeep I've ever ridden in. I've owned a 99 Jeep GC and my dad had a 98 Jeep GC and both were absolute trash.

X2, 200+ is not lot for a 4runner depending on what year 3rd gen its is, but its easily got another 100-200K+.left. i can say i also have owned jeeps in my day and never looked back when i joined the ranks of 4Runner, now i have a 96 limited and a 95 limited. My boy right now have a 99 Jeep Cherokee classic, he wants to get rid of it and get a 4runner, cause my 3.slow (95) is better off road than his jeep junk lol nah i say go with the runner check it out goo though before you by any high mileage vehicle, esp hoses and rust.

I just paid 5700 for a 98 SR5 4x4 with 160k miles in North Carolina, so that sounds pretty fair. I'd be willing to bet they'd let yours go for 5000 if you showed them the money, though.

I have 205k on mine and honestly feel it has another 100k+ left in her. I bought it with 150k on the odo. Jeeps are good for 125k-150k after that look for big problems. The main thing with any vehicle is if the PO maintained it or not, and how it was treated/driven. Also if you plan on off-roading with 33's or equiv. then a XJ requires a 5" long arm kit with minor trimming and the 3rd gen just needs 3" lift.

I bought my 98 limited with 182000 on it and it now has 237000 and it just keeps on trucking...Just keep everything maintained and it will love you back..

yea i know all about the lift stuff for both... and i really want to stay with toyota.... my 4runner is up for sale now.... my dad bought a mountain house and we need a 4wd to get up there and some more money to furnish it so yea.

I just purchased a 99 limited 4WD with 140K miles. I paid 5800. I feel like I got a good deal, but I'd expect them to come down from 5500 a bit. good luck. Great vehicles.

I just picked up a 2000 T4R Sport with 152k on it for 5200, great deal but because its a 2wd prob. Anyhow, I took it to a good buddy who's a Yota mechanic and service writer and he scoped it out for me in 25 mins to give me a yes or no. Before u buy any car an easy thing to do is a compression test at the least. At the mileage this one was at and with a passing compression test you're good. Anything else that would be wrong or might need to be fixed will be minimal compared to a rebuild. Compression test and make sure its leak free, roll underneath that bad boy once.

I just hit the 240,000 mark on my 3rd gen. I'm totally confident in the truck. It's a 99 Limited 4x4 and it feels more solid today than the day I took home my 07 Jeep JK Wrangler. I kept the JK for 1 year....sold it and bought a 10 year T4R. Never looked back. I've always been a big fan of Toyotas. My first truck was a 95.5 Tacoma and never ever let me down.

I am less than 100 miles away from 240k on my '97 bought it with 200 for 4k and after the mechanic inspected everything on it I had no problems forking over the cash, I have spent about 2k on lift tires and other mods and she is running strong and I am totally happy with my decision.

yep as others are saying, if you do your homework nothing wrong at all with buying a runner with 200k on it, i was also a jeep guy as well and never looking back, jeeps die @ about 150-200K and the runner is just getting warmed up.

I bought a 91 4runner two years ago with 345k on it, miles don't scare me at all, I want something that has been used and driven and not just sat in someones driveway. I'd say go for it and drive the crap out of it.
