Is it worth changing/upgrading things if you plan on selling for a new model

I have a 2015 trail premium and I put at a bare minimum 500 miles a week. I want to upgrade late next year when I move closer to my job. By that time I suspect I'll have close to 40k + miles since I bought it with 11k.

I want KDSS and to basically start over miles wise.

Right now I want to tint, buy new tires and rims, upgrade lights, all weather mats, running boards. How costly would it be to upgrade these parts, take them off the current 4runner and then add them to the new one? Should I just wait? I have a horrible itch to change things but I'm 99% sure im upgrading next year.

Edit** And so I don't look completely ridiculous, I know id be paying for tint twice and can easily remove the all weather mats

if you can't save the current stuff to put back on next year before trading, save your money.

tint is no biggie, just like the running boards. couple hundred left on your current rig - it'll be a good selling or trading talk. just do it and enjoy it till next round. new wheels/tires you can always take off and swap them to your next ride. lights? nah, you can skip that mod for now and weather mats... well, they're just mats. all in all, just enjoy your ride until your next purchase. you'll be down a couple hundred at most, but really, no biggie. its just money. you can always make more. make the most of your current ride and take the memories with you.

Hell no, it's not WORTH it. Put that way (no disrespect) but it's a silly question.

Man, if you can afford to trade in a 2YO vehicle, then you can afford a few hundy in options tossed away.

add ons rarely increase the value of the vehicle in the open market. We modify cars for our own wants and desires.
 
Pretty simple. Anything that can be transferred over buy now. Anything that can not, do not buy. If you are waiting for the 6th gen, don't spend a dime.
 
I guess i'm not really following the logic on why you would want to trade it in unless you are thinking of going from 5th gen to 6th gen (assuming it is out then). Other than that 40K miles is nothing and while KDSS is nice it is not worth the $$ that you essentially be paying for it. my 0.02.

To directly answer your question. 5th gen to 5th gen you can get the stuff that is easy to swap over, 5th to 6th don't spend the $$.
 
If I were you I would take a moment and crunch the numbers on leasing. It almost never makes sense financially, but where it does is for people who are constantly purchasing new or almost-new cars every year or two (and also for expensive luxury cars with ridiculous depreciation that won't be kept long term). Your mileage and the 4Runners good depreciation might make the numbers not work out, but the mods you want are all easily swapable so l would run the numbers and check if you think this wanting a new car when yours is still new thing will continue. Leasing is throwing away money, but it can be throwing away less than constantly buying new.
 
Sell the truck and get what you want. Whining about not having KDSS for the last month or so and starting multiple threads about not having it is getting kind of old. You've already made up your mind.
 
I would wait. You'll get pennies to the dollar for any upgrades you leave on the vehicle when you trade it in.

Leasing might be an option. If I did do that I'd probably just go the TRD pro route. But, do you know what limits there are on a lease in terms of mods or upgrades? I think what I'm really just trying to figure out are the costs associated with, let's say adding new hids then swapping them into a new car. Or swapping new tires with rims with stock and then adding mine onto the new car. I was in the middle of working last night and became curious so I really didn't think out how to ask the question too well. Kind of just rushed to see if I could squash my curiosity.

generally as long as they are reversible its not a problem. i have not leased a toyota so i don't know their terms, but you might not even need to remove the tint at the end of the lease. and don't forget that leasing costs and fees are negotiable. when you cost compare you will need to find out what extra mileage will cost, a standard lease is usually 15k miles per year and overages are expensive if you don't negotiate them up front. i have no idea if the numbers will work out for you, but if you are always buying new it might make sense.

as far as costs to swap stuff, just do it yourself. installing HID headlights takes less than an hour and most of that time is keeping things tidy. i have no idea what a shop would charge for HID upgrades, i don't trust other people with anything on my vehicle that involves modifying wiring. if you don't want to deal with swapping wheels maybe $60 at a shop?
