Is it worth keeping at 100k miles? what else can go wrong?

I find that hard to believe having owned two bimmers myself. Don't even speak about them in the same category in regards to reliability

I used to manage a repair shop, did a lot of custom exhaust and stock replacement.
If someone told me it would be $2500 or more for cats I'd kick them in the balls.
You can easily do them yourself for under $500.

The problem is the cats are integrated into the header, so you need to replace the entire unit. OEM header/cat combo is about 700 per side, plus labor. 2500 is a pretty standard repair cost when using OEM parts, especially since the FSM says something like 7 hours of labor for the install.

I know how they are made.
In this case the factory parts are overpriced X2. And 7 hours of labor is stoopit.
I've installed a lot of aftermarket cats, and never had an issue with any of them.
Maybe I've just done too much of my own work for too long, I have a really hard time paying for someone else to wrench on my stuff.

Oh they're absolutely overpriced. I only brought it up because that's how the install price gets so over-inflated. Using the FSM's labor cost and OEM part cost easily makes it 2500. A competent shop that's not trying to screw you over won't even charge half of that.

If you spend $2k on a repair for each, what are you getting?
Toyota= Something significant/important (Timing belt/water pump, etc.)
BMW= Cup holder insert and maybe an oil change
They are not really comparable :laugh:

Agree, the question should really be, is it worth buying with 100k. To which my answer is, yes.
This is my third 4Runner. All bought with over 100k miles. The top gear episode with trying to destroy a Hilux convinced me to stick with Toyota trucks. Esp since my 99 always starts up even tho I only drive it every 4-8 weeks at a time. Old reliable

If you are 4WD, Center DIff will will probably start leaking soon.
OP, if you want to just focus on hard numbers, look at it this way. You've owned the vehicle for 14 years and 215K miles, and put $3400+2500 of non-routine maintenance/repairs into it. That works out to $421.00 per year. Can you own a "new, maintenance free" vehicle for that? Doubtful. Even if you prorate your maintenance expenses over the last 100K miles, it only amounts to about $1000/year. Still less than the payments on a new vehicle.
The most expensive part of owning a vehicle is the depreciation in value in the first 5-7 years. You've already gone through that and paid that price. Now's the time to enjoy the fruits of your patience. This is the cheap part of your transportation strategy.
If you don't like the vehicle anymore, by all means trade it for a different (newer?) one. But you likely won't save money by doing that.
