Is my body shop ripping me off

alright, i already know they are...thats just part of the business.

but 8hrs to install a shrockworks bumper seems rediculous...
are they ripping me off or is it actually plausible

lessons learned: buy a cutting tool and welder - install EVERYTHING myself

Yes, that is ridiculous. No buddies around to help you? Or even some people on the forum who can lend a hand? Start a thread in the general section...a lot of times people help for some beer.
 
I haven't done a SW but an ARB will take every bit of 4-6 hours (more if you weld the endcaps). If they are painting the bumper, that's cheap. They also probably have no idea what they're getting into so they likely added plenty of time. You might ask them for a time/materials job, but that could run more.
 
It is in Augusta Georgia, so that may be the correct quote, with nothing against the body shop in general. If they are only familiar with American, skip em.

If you are up for a road trip west down I-20 to hot Lanta, call these guys. They do great LC work:

so...8 hrs or not it cost me just over 150. he said he felt bad for how long it took so he took down the price.

as for having people in he area. i have plenty of friends to help, but they are helping me with a projector retrofit. seeing as how i cant drive it without headlights anyways, i put it in the shop for the bumper.

the shop also left a two inch gap to the fender...so i'm gonna have to fix that later...i know to leave some space...but the essentially just left it as low as it can be mounted.

all in all i only wanted the frame rails and end caps done since i lack the tools. seeing as how that would only take 20 min, i wanted to at least give the guys a chance to make some money...joke's on me i suppose. the guys at the shop were SUPER nice, their work on the other hand...i give it a solid "meh".

thanks for responding so fast guys :hatsoff:. it gave me a leg up on dropping that price. when i say that "i know guys" who do it themselves in 8 hrs, it raises an eyebrow or two.
 
I paid 80 bucks for my ODL bumper install ...but the two inch gap???? Do you have a body lift? That would make me ticked!
 
I owned a body shop for 14 yrs, so here is my 2 cents. Yes 8 hours is too long, but it is fairly standard to quote more than you think it will take. That said I installed a Shrockworks bumper on a Nissan Frontier, and it was a *****. $150 is a great price. On the Nissan it also required cutting the grille. When you get paid close to that much just to replace the stock one.
Remember the shop is in business to make money. Of course if they were real familiar with it they might have started with a lower quote on time. The 2" gap could be an issue though, I don't remember having much adjustment at all on the one I did.

i do have a 2" body lift, but you'd think that a proffessional body shop would know to follow lines of a vehicle. i would be more pissed if i didnt have to take it off soon anyways. i have a xrc-8 comin my way

ya i was quoted at $336 for the install...apparently i raised hell over the phone (i dont recall getting THAT mad), but he dropped the price to $150. so ...not GREAT but not bad either

i have a friend around town to help. honestly though, i hesitate to ask for help though. i know everyone here is good for it, but just 6 months ago i didnt know what a diff lock did, where the trottle body was, or what coilovers were. this is my first attempt to learning anything mechanical, so i don't want to be the noob b!tch asking for help at every turn. my mechanical knowledge ended at oil and tire changes. this is my attempt to self teach, even if it is the hard way.

For my ARB installation, I did almost all the work myself, and hired a welding guy off craigslist. I haggled the price of the welding down to $75, and he came to me. He did great work , and had the welding job done in about an hour.

Hmmm, let's see, 2" gap with a 2" body lift. I am thinking that is just how it is going to fit, they don't make it adjustable. They'd have to build it with the 2" body lift in mind. Doesn't seem to me like they had any choice about following the lines of the vehicle.

i looked at the mounting brackets, i can move it up a bit. i havent measured it or anything but i did get the mounting brackts from SW with the lift in mind. they just put it at its lowest.
 
When I ordered my ODL the one inch body lift was built into the bumper. You are supposed to tell them you have a body lift when you order it!!! Savages tube bumper is adjustable but many of the plate bumpers are not :(
 
A buddy and I were taking our time and took ~8 hours to properly install my own Shrockworks front bumper and Warn M8000 winch, with the welded frame end caps; he never asked me for anything for his help and time, but I surprised and gave him $100 anyway.
 
update: the cut out my crossmember when they put the thing on. just to give them the benefit i thought i'd read the instructions again to see if MAYBE they misunderstood anything

nope.

there's the instructions. i searched everywhere on google to find them. i could only come up with 4th gen instructions. Mark was cool enough to provide them
