Is my power steering pump going bad?

for a month or so, i noticed my steering is starting to have some resistance. i replaced the oil thinking it might help, old oil is around 50000 miles. after the change, it is still the same. i dont see any leaks and the oil level dont change. i have 130000 miles on the truck and the pump was never replaced. did anyone replace your pump yet and at what mileage?

I recently had this issues on my 05'. After some quick diagnostics it turned out to be the steering rack.

275-70-17 with 144,xxx miles,

What kind of oil did you put in the power steering system?

On and off resistance from lock left to lock right. When on the streets I can feel it most during a higher speed turn. I can feel positive and negative feed back from the steering wheel.

Pump sounded fine and had correct amount of ps fluid. I refilled using Toyota brand atf

ok, exactly what i have. wow, very confusing. i am thinking its the pump since that what controls the pressure.

Haven't read many steering rack problems on here. These things should outlast the car with regular fluid changes.

thank you. you might be right. i checked the link, and noticed the shaft are corroded. wow, that is expensive. i will replace it since thats a safety hazard. its about time after 12 years of owning it. things start to get expensive with parts failing but better than having a car payment.

I whole heartedly agree on the car payments, replacing most failed parts once a year or so if you do it yourself costs about 1 to 4 car payments, that's the main reason I will never buy a new vehicle, if I can't pay cash for it I don't want it, what I save on car payments gives me plenty of money to use for the occassional part/s and I still have even more money in my pocket for other things and in case I find a great deal on another used good condition vehicle!!

Follow the link and do that repair, Had similar symptoms that just got worse. You can spray some lube into the steering shaft ujoint and it will get better for a little while but this is what you need to fix it. This was my project for today. Not very technical but a rusty pain in the ass! Now it steers like butter.

Funny thing when mine was doing it I ordered a new shaft and while I was waiting for it to arrive I sprayed with PB Blast lubricant and it solved the problem for a week. Sprayed 2 more times and never a problem since. That was 2 years ago and not an issue since then. Still have the new intermediate shaft though.��

Yup did the same thing ordered the parts sprayed w wd40 it did last a few weeks, kept spraying it for a good 6 months when my wife would complain about it but finally in the last 2 weeks the spray didnt loosen it up so I changed the shaft. I did order a new coupler for the top and the 3 new bolts. Was more of a pain as I had to do it on the ground in my dirt driveway. The bolts at the top came out fairly easy the bolt at the rack connection was difficult frozen and very little room to get at it, the bolt is at a difficult angle. The worst was getting the shaft off the rack and upper coupler as they were rusted on. The best tool was a breaker bar 18" angled up through the frame and beating it for a good hour before it came off. Going back together was easy. Dont be surprised on your road test if the vsc turns on and wont let you drive more than 5mph. was dark and cold so I did the zero gravity procedure That took care of it. Now I have very smooth steering 4Runner and a happy wife again

I wouldn't return the shaft, as soon as you do you find it needs to be replaced later, if I were you and spraying it seems to work and you can see rust on it I would just bite the bullet and install the new shaft and then you can forget about it for almost forever!!

will install it and cut the old shaft with the hack saw. i will document it and post the pictures during the Christmas holiday.
