Is it the the shock absorber or the hydraulic cylinder? Shock absorber is $300, but hydraulic cylinder is like $1400

Looks like that strut is toast from what you show. Might be a KDSS leak but i'm betting on the strut.

It's your front strut. Looks like the fluid was running down from under the cover, and collect dirt on the lower rap at the perch. I don't see anything below the perch, and that would indicate that it came from above.

Thanks Mike, what should I do at this point? Replace the driver side shock absorber? Is that all? Anything else that I need to be aware of? I

If the picture of your leak is from a Limited 4Runner, then you likely have the X-REAS suspension system.

I don't know anything about XREAS, but I do know KDSS would not show a leak like that on the coilover.
$300? for a shock? I replaced my fronts and they were $30.00 something each for OEM and i did it myself using methods found on here. Mine wasn't red though, so maybe the new runners have red shocks that cost more?

Don’t know what he has.
Doesn’t look OEM, at least my 21 TRDOPR came with the same black Tokico shocks/coilovers as my previous 14 SR5P.

XRES are more expensive, and a bit different than what you have.
Your's isn't a Limited so it won't be the same. Definitely OEM too.

I think you first need to confirm that's the problem. If so, then yes, replace it.

First - before you buy anything. Check if there are leaks anywhere else in your truck that are spilling to your shocks.
Second - Toyota assigns a 1through 5 leak-stage rating system. If its 3 or below they wont replace it. There has to be some logic to this. Therefore, have them assess and tell you what stage it is.
Third - If you do need to change it, you have two options. Replace with like-for-like XREAS system. OR Rip it out and lift it with kings and you will be at same cost, more clearance and longer lasting shocks. I know this because I had the dealer replace 2 XREAS systems. Its garbage for longevity.
Fourth - if I have my old XREAS for sale

You can't replace just one. They are all (all 4) hydraulically connected.

it looks oily, but there's only the one picture to look at. have you tried wiping it down, is the film oily or mostly just muddy
shocks sometimes mist or weep. misting is considered normal, weeping is also considered normal (depends who you ask). I'd try and wipe it down as clean as you can to see if there's an oil stream coming down that left side when there's no dirt/mud in the way
take it for a ride over some speed bumps and see what happens
