Is my truck certified pre-owned? Any way I can tell?

I bought my 4Runner (2006) from a Hyundai dealership. It has pretty low mileage for the year, approx. 54k. On the CarFax report, I know that I am the third owner, and that the first owner traded it into a Toyota dealership early on.

How can I tell if my truck was ever sold as CPO? If it was, it should follow the VIN and that extended warranty should still apply to the vehicle, correct?

There's a few small things I'd like done (TSBs, etc.)., but without actually taking it up to the dealership, is there any way to tell in advance? The dealership I bought it from didn't have any knowledge about it, but I figure that a newer truck being traded into a dealership with low miles would have likely been Certified at some point.

I purchased my Accord from Honda as a CPO and it came with a CPO checklist of all the things they inspected and or replaced. Also on my window sticker all marked it as CPO. If I recall it was like a 160 point check.

I might be wrong, but I doubt that any warranty that may have been associated with a prior CPO type sale would carry over to a subsequent owner, especially if it was through a third party (Hyundai) dealer. You can try contacting a local Toyota dealership about the TSB's, but in most cases, unless they are directly safety related, they have specific time/mileage limitations on them.

My friend bought his 07 as certified and when he traded it in the dealer could not sell it as certified. It has to be 6 years or less old. It only had 34k on it.

CPO is a sales tool, it has little meaning to subsequent owners.

I bought my 2008 with about 20k mi on it a year ago and the dealer (and the window cards) spoke of this 160 item check that the truck endured to assure me it was, "like new."

When I got home and opened up one of the storage bins in the back, I found an unrestricted/unlimited MassPort plate (not small; size of a license plate) .... The oil was dirty; they did nothing except a wash, vacuum and engine bay clean.

I'm referring to the first time it was traded into a dealership some years ago, though, not now.

I would assume that the associated extended warranty would apply to the car, not the owner?

It says on the Toyota CPO website that it is transferable at no cost. Not sure if the old owner has to do something to transfer to the new owner though. What you get out of it is the 7 year, 100k mile powertrain warranty. If it is CPO'ed then all the dealers should have the VIN on their system. A call to the service dept might clear that up. If they tell you it's not transferable and ask you if you are [Previous Owner Name], just say yes you are.

Actually, it says right there in the FAQ's of the website:

Is the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Extended Warranty transferable?
Yes, as an added resale value, all components of the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Warranty (Comprehensive Warranty, Limited Powertrain Warranty and Roadside Assistance) are automatically transferable to the subsequent owner at no charge.​

So if it was CPO'ed at one time, then it should still be. Service dept should have VIN on file.

So if it was CPO'ed at one time, then it should still be. Service dept should have VIN on file.

I would check the fine print. The warranty may have been transferable, if the purchaser sells the vehicle privately to someone else. In this case, as I understand it, the vehicle went to a Hyundai dealership (either traded in by the second owner, or they bought it at an auto auction), and they then sold vehicle to 'beeftube', who is now the third owner. Other than what ever short term used car warranty the Hyundai dealership provides on the cars it sells, I doubt they would honor a previous warranty from the Toyota dealership that sold it to the second owner as a "CPO". As to going back to the Toyota dealership that originally sold it as a "CPO" to the second owner, and asking them to honor the extended warranty, you would have to contact them directly.

Thanks for the info, folks. It's not a big deal either way, just looking for the biggest stick I can get my hands on to get Toyota to honor some TSBs that I'd like to get out of the way on a truck with pretty low mileage.
