hey guys, have been noticing a clunk in the front end last few days, only seems to do it when going over sharp bumps i.e. speedbump whilst the wheel is turned. its on the drivers side and i can feel it through the floor. so today i snooped around some and when looking at the shock....

i know its not the best picture, but the shock is starting to look oily...time for billies im guessing? would this be related to my clunk, or is the general consensus to look at sway bar bushings with what i've described? thanks guys!

The shock looks fine to me. But your upper ball joint doesn't look so great...

Looks like the shock is leaking to me...but I don't think that is your clunk. Check sway bar end links and bushings. Those tend to clunk when fully turned.

ball joint? looks fine to me? just dirty. boot is intact, not leaking, i see no issue there...

I've had plenty of clunks in various vehicles I've owned over the years, but none of them ever came from shocks. I would check swaybar end links and various bushings first.

Shock looks like its leaking and you should check it out, but probably not the source of your clunk. Bad shocks usually are evidenced by a bouncy harsh ride.

As mentioned the clunk is probably sway bar end links, control arm bushings, etc.

Do you only hear the clunk when you go over bump while you have the steering turned to full lock?

If so, the fix is dirt simple -- put some grease on your steering stops. This thread has a picture:

Try greasing your steering stops before you do anything expensive.

A leaking shock will and often does cause clunks. Have had this on Vogtland/KW V2/Koni on our Audi/M3. Good friend of mine is a Master Audi Tech running his own shop, 1st thing he looks for when someone states clunky suspension.

OP: From experience, that is precisely what my front right XREAS shock looked like, an even light oily bleed around top hat. Took them out at ~45k mi, replaced with Bilstein 5100. $325 later + 6hrs of my own time, significant clunk gone. Felt the clunk in left foot while resting on floorboard. Noticed mostly on expansion joints, lighter sharp undulations.

You will especially notice this in colder temps or when the truck sat overnight followed by the first few miles. It was driving me crazy this past winter.

You can take the few minutes to re-torque the 6-8 endlink/sway bar mount bolts, but I would strongly wager that your shock seal called it quits. XREAS amplifies this problem.

grease the end stops at the bottom by the lower control arm, turn sharp and all the way and ull see a metal to metal rub, look at the bottom.

the steering stop? good point, but it will do it even when wheel is about half turned, havent tried with full lock

If it will do it without being at full lock, then greasing the steering stops won't help. The steering stops only contact each other at full stop. So you have some other problem.
