Is putting bigger size tires on '99 4Runner a bad idea?

I got a 1999 Toyota 4Runner. It is the basic edition

Now my question is: Since the actual manafacture tires on the vehicle is a little small, would it be a bad idea to get a little bigger tires for it.

Like if any of you here is a good 4Runner fan, I am sure you have noticed that the tires that are on the Limited Edition ones are bigger in size which makes the car look much better.

I am not talking about huge tires, but normal a little bigger to make it look like the Limited Edition ones (perhaps those sizes).

I heard that it is a bad idea because it messes up with the speedometer reading etc.

Please let me know...

the only thing that it will hurt is ur gas mileage.. 265 won't mess with ur speedometer reading.. 285 will start 2 throw it off a little.. so 2 sum up its not a bad idea @ all

Biggest size you can run is 265/75/16. Stock size for Limiteds is 265/70/16.

Do you have 15" rims?

Yes, changing tire size messes with the odometer and speedometer. It depends on what tire size you choose.

Yes, I do have 15" rims. But is there a size that is in between what my size is at the moment and what the Limited's carry?

And would that have a big impact on gas/odometer reading?

if u got a 2wd then prob running 225.. u could go with 245 or 255 and it would b a large improvement and still won't affect anything that enough for u 2 notice

I have the same 4runner you are talking about, and just put on 31x10.5x15s and have no problems. The speedo is off a little but no big deal. I also haven't noticed much power drop, on the plus size it runs about 300rmp lower on the interstate.

One of the easiest ways is to look up the revolutions per mile of the tires you have and the ones you want and do some calculations in your head.

A taller tire results in lower revs/mile, so if you need to know the effect on your speedometer, just take the ratio from stock to what you are buying and apply that to the speedometer reading.

Right now with 265/70/16 your off by about 8.2%. You would be going 65 when reading 60.

If you went up to 265/75/16 you would be off by about 11.9%. That would mean going 67 when reading 60.

You could drive around with a GPS for a couple of days and learn a few key speeds. Once you know 28 is really 30 and 56 is really 60 and maybe one or two others it's easy...
