Is the 07 T4R V6‘s oil filter tightened ¾ turn without any hand tightening vs “seating”? Is seating as soon as the seal touches vs some tightening? I had a challenge getting the filters off the last two oil changes. I feel I possibly violated two steps installing the new filters. 1. Not enough oil film on the cleaned seat for the filter, even though the seal appeared greased. 2. My seating probably was too much hand tightening vs seating before using the dedicated tool to tighten an additional ¾ turn. From a natural feel I would stop less than ¾, ¼ -1/2 felt tight enough.

Getting the tight filters off has required large channel locks or a 1/8” thick X 1” wide rubber strip inside my strap type filter wrench for more grip/traction. I doubt a dedicated socket wrench would have been the answer due to it not doing a good job on our Toyota Camry.

I tighten it as much as I can with one hand. No tools. It usually requires pliers or a wrench to remove, but I've never had an oil leak, and I've never had a problem getting a filter off.

Hand tighten is all I do and I haven't had a leak. I can take the filter off by hand too. Learn by trail and error, I used to tighten it to tight by hand and have to use the oil wrench take it off. Then I would just not tighten the filter each oil change till I found just the right spot. If you have have access to grease, I had a heavy machine mechanic tell me thats what they put on the oil filter o'rings, a real light coating around it, the grease won't dry up and harden like the oil will, filter comes off with ease every time.

Personally, I think you are overthinking the problem. Hand tighten the oil filter till you can feel the seal, then tighten another 2/3 to 3/4 turn. Don't tighten it with oily hands and don't use both hands to tighten. You're not trying to tighten it until it can't be tightened anymore, just enough so where it won't loosen - usually it's about 3/4 of a turn more after you feel the seal.

You might want to buy a filter cap wrench. Usually you can get one from the dealer for $3-5. It uses a 3/8" drive. You can also buy them from AutoZone and the like. Make sure they fit your filter. It will help to remove the old filter.

Most if not all of the filters I've ever put on always require a cap wrench to remove. I've never had a problem with a Toyota filter blowing a seal by being overtightened - although I'm sure it could happen - just not to me.

I use Toyota's filters. They are high quality, are prelubed (It won't hurt to put some more oil on gasket.) and have a protective cap. Also you might want to replace the drain plug gasket at the same time and make sure that it is properly tightened by a torque wrench.

I actually use a wrench to put the filter on and take it off. The Toyota filters I use don't have a gripping surface on them and when I'm putting the filter back on I always have a little oil residue on my hands. So I feel like I can consistently achieve the same amount of tightness that way more so than I could with my hand.

I snug it all the way until I can't twirl it with my fingertips anymore, then crank on it with my hand about a half a turn to 3/4... You really can't go wrong if you tighten it by hand fairly snug...

Thanks! I’m Old School and have wrenched since about 1964 which required hand tightening only. I was trying to respect the “Dedicated Tool” but Old School is still the best method. I knew this was an unusual matter. I always check periodically for seepage at the filter and drain plug.

I have only used dealer filters and seals. I tried to use a Wix once due to pulling the filter w/o knowing I d/n have an extra and the listed filter d/n fit.

This is the correct way to do it. You get just enough force with hand tightening. Likely to need a wrench to get it off but that's better than having it back out from under tightening.
