Is the 285 really worth the hit in mpgs, opposed to the 275?

Any thoughts on P vs Lt? Looking at the Falken's, but I can't decide if a E rated tire is just a huge over kill?

It really depends on the application, but generally speaking, I stray away from E load range.

I also own a 1/2 ton truck and I don't even put E load on that. Standard Load (SL) still has be covered by an overhead of 1000lb

Off-road durability is probably the biggest reason to consider an E load for a 4Runner, great for sidewall protection, but its also not as compliant/flexible when aired down as a C or D load.

I generally like to run a 6-Ply off-road (C Load), which is what my mud terrains are.

As always, it depends on your application. I've never regretted going to 285s. The hit in MPGs was minor. If you wheel your 4Runner I recommend load range D tires. Not toooo heavy but still have 8-ply sidewalls. In SoCal we have a lot of sharp rocky terrain and I'm not looking to blow a sidewall. If you don't wheel it then go with a good P-rated tire.
