is the 4runner essentially a truck?

Trying to decide whether to purchase a 4runner I'm wondering if it has a truck frame and aside from an open bed, basically the same capabilities.

I own a 4 cyl highlander which only has a 1500 lb tow capacity but I see that the 6cyl model boasts a 5k tow capacity. Am I right in assuming that the engine /transmission of the 6cyl highlander can handle up to 5k lbs but the chassis, suspension etc. won't stand up to the rigors as well as the chassis and suspension etc of the 4runner?

I have kids and need the seating capabilities of an suv but need the capabilities of a truck for heavier and regular towing for construction. Thanks

yes they are on a frame(not sure about the 5th gens, but i think they are too), and that adds a lot to the towing. but if you want to tow with one id suggest getting a 4th gen with the v8 -same motor as the tundras, and it will do what you want

yes, the 4runner has a full frame under it.
the highlander is a unibody.

Yes, the unibody design of Highlander is not ideal for towing, while the 4Runner has a complete frame and is better designed for towing.

1,500# won't be difficult, for either the V6or (Gen 4) V8 to handle. But I would also add distance you're towing, passenger weight into that as well. Might want to consider maybe a 1/2 ton truck or larger SUV.

It is a truck. It has a steel frame to which the body is attached. It is a Tacoma with an enclosed rear end. I think you are supposed to turn off the overdrive when towing. Something about the torque converter constantly trying to lock up and something something bad. I recommend airlift or firestone suspension airbags. Cheap, easy to install, lifetime warranty, effective. Def worthwhile.

Definitely stick with the newer models of 4Runner (4th or 5th Gen) if you're going to tow much, because the older ones just didn't have the goods under the hood to pull their own considerable weight plus a heavy trailer.

I appreciate the replies. I've been towing with my highlander, and even with light loads that it's rated to handle the wear and tear has been significant. I'm considering the 4runner because I'm trying to strike a balance between decent gas mileage, a good family vehicle that isn't too big, and the capability to regularly tow light to moderate loads as per the vehicle's rating and not stress out the transmission or drivetrain. I prefer toyota as well and though I could make good use of a truck just can't do it with the family needs.
