Is the keyless remote only way to disengage car alarm?

In some occasions, I don't want to carry the whole key chain with me when doing certain sports like swimming. I wanted to be able to lock/unlock the car with just the key and leave the keyless remote in the car. My problem is that every time I unlock and open the door with the key, car alarm goes off. I had to press the disengage button on the remote to shut it up. Of course it pisses people off including myself. The car security system came with the car with I bought it from a used car dealer.

My question is how I am supposed to operate the car with just the key?

Anyway, When you set it off all you have to do is put your key in the ignition and turn to acc or on, then the alarm should start. If at that point the alarm keeps you from starting the car, then you have to locate the valet switch.

With an aftermarket alarm it's hard to know where that is going to be-but they are almost always on the driverside kick panel-by your left foot when your in the driver seat. It will be a simple toggle switch, put your key in the ignition, turn to ON or ACC and flip the switch to off.

When you get out of the truck you just hit the lock button on the driver door right? and it still sets off the alarm when you open it back up with your key?

I have the original Toyota keyless remote FCC ID: HYQ1512Y. I think there is a aftermarket alerm system installed but not sure how to locate the brand/model.

I do have a little switch near my left leg I can turn of/off. But I wanted to avoid the alarm from setting off by opening the door using a key. I expect the alarm to disengage when I open the door with a key.

I'm not sure if I understand your question. My apologies.

If you set the alarm with the keypad, I don't think there is anyway you can get the key to turn off the alarm just by opening the door. If you don't set the alarm with the keypad the alarm shouldn't go off when you open the door with the key.

What you said does make sense. Here is what I have tried -

• I locked the car with the key by turning the key to the left until all doors clicked and locked.
• Unplugged the key and walked away.
• When I returned, I inserted the key and turn the key to the right until all the doors clicked and unlocked.
• As soon as I open the driver or passenger door, alarm went off.
• I had to rush to find the keyless remote to shut off the sound.

Based on that info ^, I think you would have to do the following when you want to leave the keypad.
1. Have the key to ON or ACC
2. Flip the switch to off
3. Pull key out and lock the doors with key or button on the door

I'm sorry about the confusion earlier, I didn't realize that the alarm would default to ON. It doesn't seem like it should.
( I haven't messed with alarms in quite a while-been remoteless on our 02 since we got it and the alarm on my 96 has never acted right so i dont use it.)

edit: If you are in a spot where you can't find the keypad and the alarms going off you can put the key in the ignition and turn to ON to stop the alarm while you find the keypad

If it helps, mine does that too. I have a 2000 factory alarm. If I lock it with the remote and unlock it with the key it goes off. I never use my remote, so if you lock it with a key and unlock with a key no alarm goes off. I don't think it arms it with just the key, not 100% sure though. Hope that helps some

That's what I was thinking but I think OP's might default to arm the alarm no matter how he locks it-might have misunderstood though.

Bottom line is I only use the key to lock/unlock the truck 1% of time. I don't want to disable the alarm system by flipping the switch and then forget about it :repuke: Just make sure I understood it, if I use the key to lock the truck, the truck is locked but not armed with security system, correct? The keypad is the only way to arm the security system?

I'll try again by only using the key to lock/unlock see if it still sets off the alarm.

That's my experience. Only way the alarm will go off is if you arm it with the keypad.
