Is the paint protection film on the car fading or is this normal?

My front bumper has a full film on it and now it doesn't match the rest of the body. It is more apparent on the bottom of the doors. The truck is only 4 months old.

I am starting to see some spots where the edge is starting to get black

Seems like the film on my Tundra changed color pretty quickly too. Mine was super white and I noticed it within a few months.

After it change it never seemed to get any worse....I just ignored it after awhile.

Take it back to whoever did it. It should have a warranty against fading/yellowing for a few years at least.

Weird. Is your from Toyota as well? Is it 3M like the ones on the Lexus?

It's from Toyota. Probably part of the "Paint Protection" package that GST installs at the port. No idea what brand it is.

Needless to say, I negotiated that right out of the purchase price. Friggin GST and all their add on BS.

I should have negotiated it out but I wanted it since Toyota paint is not the best so I actually looked for a truck with it. :doh:

Toyota paint itself is fine, it's the black and white that aren't good because they're single stage paint instead of a base and clear coat like the pearl and metallic colors

ll PPFs are not created equal. Often, the PPF installed by dealers (or by the manufacturer at port) is the cheapest stuff they can find.

The white paint will show yellowing earlier, but 4 months is ridiculous. The aftermarket stuff has years of peeling/yellowing warranties.

While the plastic bits on a car (bumper, plastic trim) will never match the color of the paint on metal (because of the flexing agents added to the paint) and the dealer may "blame" it on that, point out the yellowing of the added PPF on metal bits.

There is also some PPF that comes directly from the factory (wheel arches) that is, most likely, a different product and far thicker.

Rather than going to the dealer, I'd suggest going to a detailer that does PPF and ask them what they think is going on - then go to the dealer, but remember that you'll need to raise this in the first 6 months.

I agree totally [MENTION=390705]cb1111[/MENTION] I have had 2 runners with 3m Venture Shield on it. I had a top installer in the area do it both times and it did not yellow. However, both times the color was the Mag Gray, so it would be a little harder to detect. On an old Chevy, I had PPF placed on it and it yellowed terribly.

Do what [MENTION=390705]cb1111[/MENTION] says, take it to a reputable installer and get their advice, then approach the dealer about it. I'd push it because it's pretty clear in the pictures, and if you can see it on that it must be really bad.

My factory installed film looks about the same as yours. Mine is 8 months old. Mildly annoying but OTOH it has spared me from a few stone chips. I think even faint yellowing is just very apparent against the super white.

FWIW guys, I owned a MGM from Sept 2011 to Sept 2018 and no yellowing with 3m Venture Shield.....but remember, White shows any little bit of discoloration.

my Lexus had that and it yellowed/discolored a bit and got dirt around the edges. I think it's more noticeable on a super white as my 4Runner now still looks great.

I removed mine on same day I bought the 4Runner because couldn't stand that line on the front of the hood. Makes it look like those 80's car with fiberglass bumpers. I have some rock chips but touched up still look better than that rubber (ahem, vinyl).

I had my wifes jeep done about 8 years ago. I was given a bottle of stuff to apply a couple times a year to prevent yellowing. I think I only applied it twice in 8 years and it still looks fine.

I wonder what brand of ppf Toyota/dealer used on your 4Runner. It also depends on the installer who installs the film.

I heard the better ppf brands are Suntek and Xpel. I have Xpel on my front bumper (Limited model) including the chrome pieces, the hood and the rocker panel where the running boards are.

Yikes! That's not good after only 3 months. As others have said on the thread, not all PPF's are created equally. My go-to is XPEL. Their ULTIMATE PLUS PPF has a 10 year warranty that covers yellowing. Parts AND labor. Maybe go back to the dealer and ask them to re-do it in XPEL or get a refund (which seems like a shot in the dark but worth a chance).

The only other thing I'd say is, what are you using to clean the film? After reading a bit online it seems like certain waxes/washes/chemicals can stain the film (any film) over time.
