Is the rear power outlet supposed to cut off after a while?

Hey gang - 2005 SR5 V6. I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I'm hoping it's a simple answer.

I hooked up some emergency lights in the back of my 4Runner and connected the wire to the 12V line going into the back of the rear power outlet. As long as the key is on, the lights works great.

However...while driving with them a few days ago, I noticed the lights suddenly turned off after like 20 minutes of highway driving. When I slowed down to get off an exit ramp, they came back on. Then when I got back on the highway, they cut out after another 10 minutes. And THEN, after 45 minutes of nothing, they suddenly came back on and stayed lit for the remainder of the 4 hour trip.

Obviously I've done a check of all the wires and connections and everything is fine. It's either the outlet or the module powering the lights that's causing the issue. So to help isolate the problem, can anyone tell me - does the rear power outlet turn itself off at certain speeds or after a certain amount of driving time? Or is the rear power outlet supposed to stay on indefinitely (as long as the key is ON)?

no, it should always be on while the key is on. try replacing your fuse.

It should stay on all the time with key in ON position. You probably have an intermittent wire harness problem.

Both front and rear 12 volt outlets are powered by the same fuse and relay. The fuse is 15A. Do you know how much current your emergency lights draw? I would plug in a phone charger or something that draws very low amperage (without the phone plugged in) but has a small led to show that it's powered in to the front power port.

Then when the lights go out in back, you can check the front charger to see if the led is illuminated. If it's still illuminated, your fuse, & relay are good. I would then double check the plug to the power outlet in back to make sure it's snug, then check to make sure there isn't any corrosion in the outlet itself. Lastly make sure the wires are good at the disconnect between the fuse box & power outlet.

If your led goes out on the charger when the emergency lights go out as well, then you have a problem with the relay or fuse. Most likely the relay. If you have a problem with the fuse, it'll just blow. It's not going to magically mend itself to start working again. The only other issue could again be corrosion on the contacts of the fuse / fuse holder, & relay.

that's a really good idea. The lights are VERY low draw. like 2 amps or something. I actually have an adapter with an LED light I just use to test outlets sometimes. I'll certainly do that next time I use them. Appreciate the suggestion!

I'm looking for the relay for the power outlet of my 4Runner 2004 Limited, I looked at the dealer, but they didn't know which is the relay that fits in it.

Could anyone help me with this?

It's on the back of the fuse block. I think I had to remove the left lower kick panel and the lower portion of the dashboard, and then unscrew the fuse block and turn it around in order to get to it.

If you look up the "12v constant power" modification it will show you where this block is and also how to bypass it so your 12v outlets are always on. Since we run a fridge on long trips this was an important mod for me to do.
