V6 problems?
Duc Hunter - I respectfully disagree with this statement about the V6's having problems...
"Toyo, agreed! The V6's, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM, has had massive problems, including the 4.0. I think Toyota needs to not build V6's, they have a mental block against them. "
The 4.0 had only one minor complaint against it the first year it was introduced. If the 4.0 V6 had so many problems, do you honestly think Toyota would be so stupid as to use it as the "ADRENALINE" factor selling point to increase their Tacoma sales? So if the new V8 has problems do we also declare that every single one of the V8's has massive problems?
Honestly now... Toyota has only produced 1 V8 engine that has served very well. The V6's were always underpowered, butextremely reliable, and now on the 3rd generation of the V6 on the 4Runner (I believe it's the 3rd V6), they have done a fabulous job. It's not a hard core offroader engine, nor is is a power tow/haul engine, but a truck that is this big and gets 23+ MPG and borders on ULEV is substantial. Most people who tow large trailers prefer larger trucks to better control the vehicle and the load being towed. And any hard-core offroader will tell you that a stock vehicle has to be modified if you want a reliable hard-core offroad vehicle.
I think Toyota did a great job of positioning the V6 and the V8 in this truck, and it really comes down to what you want the truck for.
If you drive more than 300 miles per week and have a phobia about putting $50 per week in the tank, the V6 would be a great choice. If you are towing heavy loads, or just want that extra "ADRENALINE" factor, or the convenience of AWD and the gas $$ is not a factor, the V8 would be a great choice.
Personally, I would have loved the V8, but the price I got on the V6 and the ability to tow my 4500 lb boat with 6 people in the car (on occasion) and get 23 MPG during the week (commuting alone) sold me. I have no regrets about the V6 whatsoever.
As for resale, yea, the '05 should be worth more if you sell it after 5-6 years, but if you keep it more than 8 years, the benefit is negligible.
