Is there a need for cup holders on the 96-98?

We could also look into working together on this as well. You already have a machine to help with the demand. I'm just not sure how big your build platform is. I can't remember what the DaVinci's have. 8x8? Most of my machines are around 6"x11" with my biggest at 14"x14".

I think between the two of us we could come up with a pretty sweet cup holder and probably be able to dedicate a couple machines to strictly printing 3rd gen cup holders.

I'm a mechanical Engineering teacher and teach different CAD software all day. Looks like between the 3 of us we should easily be able to make a simple cup holder that looks and functions well.

So I have been working on a preliminary prototype for this single and double cup holder and I'm now stuck. I have taken this as far as I can without the actual console in my hands. I had a buddy with a 3rd gen that was going to let me use his console to make the final fitment changes and he just sold it. I just got back from my two local pick a parts and both places had a few of the correct year 4Runners but all of them had no center console left. If someone would loan me the front section of their console, I would ship it back with my latest cup holder installed. The cup holder and shipping would be free. I just need the part for about a week to two max. I don't need the back part with the ebrake going through it. I just need the section that has the tranny and tcase shifter going through it. That's the part that touches the dash. I will leave this offer open for a couple days and if I don't get any takers then I will hit a couple other junk yards early next week.

Hmmm If only I had a 98 runner. I have a 99 though. I have to say I use my cupholders now for my wallet. Would be neat if You could make a wallet mount for all 3rd gens. Even better yet a clip that mounts flush to the console so I could put my pistol on either side for easy access. I would be interested in that for sure

This is what I came up with for my school project. Works perfect for what I want. Includes the bracket so you can easily remover the cupholder while it's not in use if you want.

How deep are the holders? And have you noticed any flex in the setup with a heavier drink like a large cup from a fast food joint?

So, does anyone know if somehow the Tacoma cup holders would work?

My old 98 Tacoma had a collaspasble cup holder, it would be a single then expand ( pull out) to a double, mounted on the passenger side. I really liked it, and would like to find a center counsel from a Tacoma and see its I could make it work in my 99' runner.

I did find a big difference but not in years. The 2WD is quite different then the 4WD bezel. I also realized that there are two pieces that make up that section of the center console. There is the top black bezel then the gray or tan lower piece that connects to the carpet. I need both pieces and will need them from a 2WD and 4WD. Not sure I'm going to get that lucky here. I may need to check out a few more junk yards.

I don't have the exact measurements with me right now but I can let you know this weekend. It handles the load pretty well. It moves down about half a inch and then begins to rest of the floor below it.
