Ive heard canvas back is good. Thinking about it myself, but might just go with the kennel because our lab doesn't like to stay in the back.

do it more often helps. but really, persistence and elbow grease. the vacuums with the pet hair attachment do work pretty well. Also the self serve vacuums at car washes work decently. i've taken the wife's 4runner a few times now and I've stayed on top of the hair. my dog sheds like crazy, white hair too. After every camping trip the entire cargo area is coated.
Even though we never taught her as such, ours thinks a kennel is punishment. She's really good about staying in the back. But 3 years of not keeping up on the hair is pretty embarrassing when you start cleaning it.
I looked at the canvas back but it seems like that doesn't cover every surface in the back.

I used one of these from Walmart. Rubber bristles brush removes dog hair easily.

I have two labs, one of which would rather ride shotgun than stay in the back with the other. I knew this would not be an option with the fake leather seats in the pro. My first trip with the dogs involved folding the rear seats flat and installing a wire pet barrier so they could not get to the front seats. It worked out well.
However, as the OP indicated, the dog hair weaves itself into the carpeting. A lot of persistent vacuuming is what it took to get the majority of the hair out of the carpeting. I am sure there is still a bit in the carpet, but not enough to bother me at this point.
The dogs typically ride in my daily driver (Pontiac Vibe) instead of the 4Runner, so I probably will not worry too much about keeping the hair out of the 4Runner. As for the Vibe, the dog hair gets terrible in it, mainly because I do not clean it as often. However, my solution for the back of it was to buy a heavy rubber mat (which is designed for a pickup bed liner) and trim it as necessary to fit in the back of my Vibe (which has the seats folded down most of the time). The mat allows the pups to dig in their claws and have some traction as opposed to the hard plastic flooring of the Vibe.
I have been thinking of a similar mat for the back of the 4Runner, simply because the mat does not allow things to slide around.

The PO of my 5th gen had pups. It was pretty bad
and also had a pound of loose kibble in the cargo area lol.
I used a sticky roller several times for any loose hair, took duct tape and wrapped the sticky side out around my hand and patted the stubborn stuff several times that was woven in, and then did several vacuum sessions with multiple attachments.
I travel a lot so I can't have a pup, but 2.5 yrs later I still find hair in there. Nothing works 100% but with some work it can be cleaned pretty well in an afternoon.

I know the feeling of dog hear and vehicles. Our lab refuses to stay in the back and with eventual kids, we have been considering a crate for the cargo area. I just sealed the deal for a new 17' TRD Off Road that's on a boat at the moment but prior to the deal I was scrubbing like crazy to get the dog hair out. Aside from taking it to a professional shop, it was mostly (as many users suggested) vacuuming and elbow grease.
Yep that's what I use. I use a vac first then most the woven hairs come out with the rubber brush.

Mist with water, then use a rubber brush or glove. The hair will clump right up for easy removal.

This so far of many products has worked the best for me.
Goes on sale from time to time for about 20 and believe me even when i say its the best product i've used, expect to spend some time working this time. It does get easier when you use it regularly.

I once heard a rumor that a microfiber cloth was the way to do it. Sadly, it is a lie. The only thing that really works for me is a vacuum cleaner. I did have a little luck with this:

In the long run, I would use the misting water and then use the pet wedge, then vacuum. Needless to say, don't do it in August in Texas.

Keep digging around on their website, there are add ons you can get to cover the passenger doors and most of the plastic in the cargo area.

I use a regular dust pan brush to get the majority of the hair out, then I use one of those tacky roller things others have mentioned. I take out the back carpet and brush it firstly. That procedure works very well for me. I hate making an elaborate event out of this task.
