Is there a thread for this? LC v. T4R?

Has this question been posed somewhere else already? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Has anyone run comparisons on 99/00 4runners and 1996/97 land cruisers? (Or can they?) (:

Better, worse, works better for this than that, etc? Curious!!

Thanks!

Not close to the same, out of the box the L/C is better at everything, except fitting between trees and fuel economy.

Yeah, if I had infinite $$ for gas I'd drive an FZJ80 without a second thought.

4Runner fits my lifestyle better though at the moment.

It has been discussed many times.

I owned a '95 FZJ80, W/F&R locking diffs, OME springs, ARB bull bar, and Warn winch. It was nice enough, and I owned it for 5 years from new. It also made a nice Business write-off.

In '97 I bought my 4Runner with the V6, 4wd, 5-speed, E-locker, with larger optional brakes, wheels, and tires, factory leather and moonroof.

Suffice it to say I still have the 4Runner, over 18 years later.

I found the 4Runner more comfortable, and just more fun to drive.

That said, if I could import a new LHD 76 series Landcruiser with manual trans and the V8 Turbodiesel engine, I'd sell the 4Runner today.

Thanks guys, I was having a mental moment... Sadly, I'm not in a place financially to get another 'Runner at the moment... Granted, the last one wasn't *actually* mine and it got sold. Because I want one so incredibly much, my head kind of turns itself inside out, turning it into wanting whatever kind of rig I can get my grubby little hands on. Patience, more patience! The 3rd gens are an obsession, one only my family and you all can not judge! (;

Driven a LX450 for a period.

The slowest vehicle I have even piloted. Getting to 60 was minutes. It was leagues slower than my first car a 1991 Dodge Caravan.

Just my 2cents, its too slow and MPGs too low to DD around town. Unless you find one on IH8MUD with a conversion or supercharger---then by all means drive it.

I had this dilemma brfore I bought my '99. It really depends on where you live and what you'll be doing with the truck.

4runner: smaller (fits between all PNW trees), better MPG, moderate capability.

80: bigger, worse MPG, excellent capability.

Both are great and similar money, but a small exploring truck for easy to moderate off road and comfortable freeway cruising is what I wanted.

Umm, was it a 2.5L turbo? Cause those out the box are faster than a lot of cars or suvs. LOL. Miss my old 2.5L turbo Shadow. Thing was a sleeper.

A 1FZ Land Cruiser is several steps above a 22RE powered 4Runner in the power department, and thirty years later that little 22RE is still enough power for lots of people. It's a truck, not a race car. If you want a powerful SUVish thing, buy a GC or LandRover.

What is 0-60? Like 12 seconds? Sounds right about in check for a mid-nineties Land Cruiser with a very big straight six. That's not slow, relatively speaking. Try driving a truck with a 22RE. You could win a race against those on a bike. Of course it's slow today because your average BOF SUV has around 300+ HP, but that is due to 20 years of technology changes and market demands.

Same with the MPG's. It was 1996, a much happier time for SUV's and fuel prices. No one really cared that the FZJ80 got 13MPG when guys like Biggie Smalls and Busta Rhymes were showing them off in music videos. Think of the 80 as equivalent to what a Range Rover or Escalade is today.

My sister has a 97 FZJ80 with a 3" OME lift. One of the nicest vehicles I've ever driven. Certainly not fast, but even with a front solid axle it is smoother than any car I've ever driven (literally, though that could be attributed to tire size too). It's awesome and all, but honestly for what I do I would stay with the 3rd gen. It feels a lot more nimble and maneuverable and will carry as much gear and let me sleep in it so I'm happy. As far as long overland trips though, the 80 wins hands down.

I still prefer the 3rd gen and 40 series combo, but I'm biased :loco:

If power is considered a top priority when buying a Toyota SUV. You should not be looking to buy a Toyota. PERIOD.

You people have got the wrong idea about what I was saying. Im not racing a LX450 down the drag strip. I just want to be able to pull out of the grocery store parking lot on a busy street and be able to get up to traffic speed in time.

FJ80 struggles in this area of everyday life

I stand by my statement. I have yet to see a pre 2002 toyota SUV to have the power I need to get into traffic easily. Once the 4.0L v6 in 2003 was released, you finally had the power to at least pull out in front of traffic.

I love the LX450 and dont care about it being under powered. I would build one of those in a heartbeat!

My 22RE/automatic 1986 4Runner had plenty of power to leave the grocery store parking lot and get up to speed in time. Your LX had about twice the oomph as that 4Runner, so if you couldn't get out of the parking lot safely then you were pulling out into gaps that were way too small.

Again, not a sports car. Buy an Evoque if you want to pretend you're on a racetrack.
