parts cost a lot more for the 80. we can get a set of headlights for about $70 for the 80 series its about $300 for stock looking headlights.
some things i like about the 80
The solid axles are strong enough for up to 37" tires.
Disk brakes front and rear
Longer wheel base
more lift for a better aproach angle and good for river crossings
excellent crossover angle for the frame once lifted.
airbox design is very good
longer links than the 4runner.
obviously more cargo room, but im content.
good aftermarket support for offroad
front locker was an option.

my main issues with the 80 are
the truck cost 60k from toyota so the parts are going to be significantly more, and because less of them were sold than 4runners there is not a goof aftermarket for non offroad parts
The radius arm design is flawed and does not flex evenly with the rear
The axles hang low and the radius arms even lower,
Poor poor fuel economy and weaker engine compared to v6.
The body is very wide compared to most offroad vehicles so sometimes it just wont fit down a trail, this also makes it susceptable to body damage.
compared to changing the cv on a 4runner changing the axle shafts on the 80 is messy and also requires more tools. the 4runner has equal length axle shafts on both sides for front and rear.
The exhaust goes underneath the frame and is easily crushed including the cats.
The tail gate is nice on the 80 but id rather have the roll down window.
Its very tall once you lift it and put 37s

in a nutshell its expensive and wide and has good traction.

I HIGHLY disagree with most of your negatives. Now I don't actually own an FZJ80, but I have had plenty of experience with them. I do own the axles off an 80 that currently reside in my FJ62. I can assure you, even with V8 power and all the crazy things I do, the axle shafts are golden. YOU will NEVER need to change one. I only have 35's, but I'm locked front and rear, and the only problem I've ever had in an axle was a broken spider gear in my rear ARB. And I still drove it 300 miles and towed my travel trailer home with the rear locked up like a spool.

The body is NOT as wide as an H1. Yes trees do look for and find the right rear corner.

There really isn't that much support for 3rd gen aftermarket, especially when compared with JK's or TJ's.

The 1FZE is bullet proof, will easily go 400K, without ever needing a timing belt.

The one negative I almost agree with is the fuel economy. I think 13 MPG is the norm, in the big picture that is only 4 mpg less than the runner. Hey I only get 11 out of mine, and this December will be 20 years as an owner!
