Is there a way to tell if the timing belt has been changed before? (V6)

That would be a unique case, can you find out for sure?

The '07 FJ and 4Runner, with a single 2008, have made up all of the stretched timing chain cases I found while researching my problem. If this happened on a well-maintained 2009 it would counter the thinking on a bad batch of timing chains as the root cause.

Very interested to know the year of his FJ if you don't mind finding out...

Or another data point supporting the theory of defective timing chains, if his '08 was built in 2007.

There's a steel plate on the driver's door frame with the VIN and other data...upper right corner should be the month & year it was manufactured.

yeah. theres a 2 hr time diff between us so I try not to bug him a lot during the week, especially if he's on call.
