Is This a Build Thread?

Well, I guess I can start a build thread now that my truck is no longer just another 4Runner. I bought this 2001 SR5 4WD in July 2016 for $3500. It had 222k miles on it when I purchased it and ran absolutely perfect and I couldn't be happier with the guts of the truck. Now for how it looked... not as big a fan. Love the color, no clear coat issues or fading just some scratches and dings. Some rusty running boards and a front bumper that needs to be replaced. It had a mismatch set of tires on it and the paint flaking on all the wheels. It just looked like a mini van...

A couple months later and I have fixed the stance completely:

Front Suspension: Tundra Bilstein 5100s with brand new TRD Coils. I achieved around 3 inches of lift and I think it rides great up front. I wasn't a fan of the bouncy, floaty feel of the worn out stock suspension. No diff drop needed, my CV angles stayed pretty healthy.

Rear Suspension: Used FJ80 8 wraps with FJ80 front shocks from Monroe. The back sits pretty high. I achieved around 4/4.5 inches in the rear and have a nice take to the truck now. I think the rear end feels pretty good so far but I've really only driven around 100 miles so far.

I went with Cooper STT Pros in a 285/75/16. I wanted to go 305/70/16 but I also wanted to keep the stock 5-star wheels so 285s it was as without wheel spacers the 305 would be too much tire. I will be adding a small spacer soon as even the 285s could use just a little clearance of the upper control arms.

I didn't take any pictures of the lift install or anything but I will say this. It wasn't an easy job. My dad and I did it in our garage and it took us a good while. Spring compressors suck and I wouldn't want to do it twice. Nothing went wrong it's just hard work.

I'm very happy with how it sits and handles so far. I'll put 1000 miles on it and let the suspension settle in and make sure everything is all good before I take and test it out on the trails.

I'll get some better after pictures in the daylight this week...

You're going to feel silly in a year when you get a bigger mod bug and have this far from stock.. all while uploading it into a thread titled "is this a build thread" lol [emoji38]

I'm okay with it haha. If it ever gets to that point it will be an ironic title that hopefully everyone will know by name!

Haha yeah. It'll be a SAS'd beast and people will be wondering if that still counts. Haha :)
Nice start though. I like it

I appreciate it! There's a long list of little stuff up next before I put anymore real money into it

Sounds like you are doing it the proper way for sure, getting the little things all dialed in before you jump into the major mods. Good work!

Thanks! It's definitely gonna be a process

Absolutely, it most definitely is. I am currently doing the same with my truck, I want to make sure its running perfectly before I go in and start putting money into less crucial parts. It takes time, but is so worth it in the end

Absolutely loving the set up so far! Went and took some pictures today while I had a few minutes to kill.

I need to decide on a color for the wheels, I'm leaning towards a brighter silver possibly or something close to the original color. I also think the right shade of brass/copper/gold could look pretty sweet too

I like them as-is

Nice rig man! [emoji1360]
I think the OEM silver color looks great.
If they're in rough shape, there is a "wheel paint" that Dupli-color or Krylon makes, and it's a REALLY nice Metallic silver. A few coats of that with a few coats of the "wheel paint" clear coat, and they'll be lookin fresh for sure.

Yeah they're in pretty rough shape, some of the original finish is peeling and flaking off. They definitely need to be sanded down and redone
