Is this a horrible way to choose a tire or what?

Ok so 4wheel parts is going to install the Daystar spacer lift (1.5/2.5 or whatever it is) on my t4r after christmas. I need 265/70/17 tires to fill in the gaps. I don't do any off roading unless it's surfing weather then I am driving on the beach every week (if that counts as off-roading). I know that the REVO or even a less aggressive tire is what I should be looking at but I love the look of the BFG AT KO!

I had them on my '00 Chevy Blazer 4x4... 31x9.5 and they rode like a rock... but then again the blazer's stock ride sucked as well. At that time I had a honda s2000 so when I wanted a great handling car I just hopped in that.

Now it's just the 4runner in my driveway and I love the way it rides, handles, and sounds. I just want to give it that "move out of my way or I will run over you" type look. I don't want it to ride like my Blazer did but the way the BFG looks beats every other AT tire hands down.

So my question is: Am I an idiot for choosing a tire based on looks? haha, ok dont answer that but serisouly.. is it a bad idea?

No, you are not an idiot for wanting something more aggressive looking like the BFG AT KOs. They should be a fine street tire and give the look you want. Now if you wanted 35+ boggers or something like that for looks alone the you might get :bash:

How much is 4WP charging for the DS install alone, excluding alignment??
 
:iagree: You're not crazy for wanting a good looking tire.

Revos offer awesome on-road manners and a good look. Another with 'tough looks' and good road manners is Toyo Open Country A/T. Both of these come in a 'P' variant which will ride almost like stock.

If you go with the BFG the ride will be a little firmer but the T4R's suspension is so much better than the old Blazer it'll still be nice. The good news is that it's it's hard to go wrong with a T4R and the tires size you want.

Just to mix it up a little: Goodyear SA's come in 275/70/17 and that'd look great!:D They have great on-road manners too. Search the user spaceman to see pics.

BFGs do have the best looks and lettering of any A/T tire out there but I think the Nittos run a close second in the looks dept. and they are a fair amount cheaper and on road they are a little better behaved and comprable off road in my experiences with both.

CJ3Flyr - The REVO is a second place for me for sure. I like the look of the tread on those but from the side they dont give the I can drive anywhere look that the BFG KOs offer. I guess my real struggle is between those two tires... will the REVOs ride so much better that I will be ok with the looks? Has anyone (on a 4runner) gone from REVOs to BFG or visa-versa? I know that Thai (sp?) has done this on his G but I was looking for an opinon with the suspension of the runner.

RonMaiden- Are those the TerraGrapplers? They do look good on your runner, what size are they? Have you had BFGs on your runner or on a different vehicle? If you had them on your t4r did you notice a difference in accelleration / braking when you switched to nitos? When I put BFGs on my blazer the thing felt like it weighed a ton but my 4runner is so much quicker than the blazer ever was I'm hoping that it will just be a little more unsprung weight but not a big deal.

$159 for labor to install the lift is not bad at all. But then you say $600. Assuming $100 as the high end dollar range for the alignment that makes the DS kit $340 very pricey to say the least. Is it new style or old style. New style is real simple to install and I would assume that is what it is as the install labor is low. But with wheelers selling the kit for only $150, your labor is more like $341. Overall still not a bad deal at all if you cant or dont want to install it yourself. Just try to be on site to make sure they do it carefully using the correct BJ seperator (not pickel fork) and that they dont stress any sensor wires. Good Luck.

The user/admin 'Falls' has run both on late model 4Runners. Maybe he'll chime in or you can PM him. He responded to your exact question not than long ago and for his needs he leaned towards the Revos. He recently bought another set of Revos for himself.

I have a good amount of recent Revo time and my BFG exp is so old it's a little foggy.

BFG's: Look cool, tough as nails, ride frimer, some claim they're a pain to balance and require frequent rebalancing. Others seem to do fine with respect to balancing. They seem to just be OK in the rain. As they age and wear the ride gets even tighter (I remember that 1st hand.) They are a little better than Revos off-road. Off-road they're considered much better due to toughness in the sidewall for the rock-crawling types. In some types of snow they're better.

Revos: Almost street tire quiet; as they age they'll get somewhat louder but never obnoxious. Amazing in the rain. Smooth ride. Very competent in most light AT situations. (Nothing short of a M/T really does super-good off-road.) They hold balance really well. Good in most snow.

Did you look at the GY SA's in the 275/70/17 option? I think they look tough, fill the wells beautifully and they're getting rave reviews. I mentioned the Toyo's as I've owned them. I agree with J.A. The Nitto is a close relative of the Toyo and might be worth a look too.

It's a really tough call. The good news is any of the choices you thinking of are great choices and you'll love it!

I'm running the BFG's for looks! And they are a pretty decent tire IMO!

JA - Sorry, the lift cost is $159. The rest is labor and taxes. It is the easy install lift. I've never done any suspension work so I am hesitant to install the lift myself... plus they warranty the work. I stressed the importance of using the XREAS instructions when installing the lift and the tech seemed compentent in his answers. He did a 2.5" spacer for my bud's comander and it turned out f'n sweet. I don't think that the jeeps have the goodybag of electronics that the t4r does though so good points about the sensor wires.

CH3FLYR - How many miles did you get out of your REVOs and how many before they started to become louder? Did you ever do any driving on the sand or the beach with REVOs? My BFGs kicked *** in the sand.

I like the GY SA, just don't know much about them. SPACEMAN: if you are viewing what do you think of the ride and noise factor? I have some hesitations about going that tall from an acceleration/braking standpoint. Any sand reviews?

Iron CLad - your t4r looks sick... exactly what I am going for... i like the blackwall out for sure. glad to know i'm not the only one choosing a tire for looks.

Got it. You are getting very fair prices for the lift parts and install labor.

Can you take and post up accurate measurements of the 100% topout spacer as well as before and after measurements of the vehicle on both sides. Thanks.

I sold the vehicle when they had about 38k. I am anal about rotation and pressure. Sidenote: Most with Revos like 38-40psi (they are 44psi max tries). Beginning at 32-35k they began to get a bit louder but still very tolerable. They were great in the sand even without airing down...

Thanks everyone... I'm going to go with the revos. I think they will be a good compromise of looks and on road ride. I will measure before lift, after lift, and after lift with revos at all four corners and post the measurments and pics when I have it done. Thanks again for the suggestions and responses.

i am running 265/75-16 BFG ATs. I love them in all conditions. Great in the slush if you are in a northern state like me. My folks use the Kuhmo ATs on their Tundra and they like them alot. You can get those in a P rated tire. Not quite as agressive, but very functional. If you have the funds, you will not be disappointed with the BFGs.
 
I have only run Revo's on my 4R , had BFG'S on all my prev. trucks . (since 1985)

IMO BFG has an excellent tough look.
 
As Promised

A little late, BUT:

Ground to fender, measured through center of the wheel....

Before lift, Stock Tires:
Front Driver Side: 33 1/16"
Rear Driver Side: 35 1/4"
Front Passenger Side: 33 1/4"
Rear Passenger Side: 35 1/2"

The lift is being installed tomorrow. I will post pics and measurements with the stock tires. The 265/70/17 BFGs are being installed Thursday and I will post pics and measurements then too! Thanks everyone for helping with the decision!
