Is this an alternative to Hybrid Technology?

I just heard about something called Variable Cylinder Management by Honda where the computer can take a V6 engine and make it run on three Cylinders while cruisng and then utilize all 6 cylinders when accelerating or when high power output is desired

Been around for quite some time...chevy had it first IIRC.

No its not really an alternative to hybrid tech as it still uses gas.

Unfortunately, it took Japanese engineering to perfect that technology. :bash:

But there must be a reason we drive Toyotas instead of Chevys... :biggrin2:

The firsts were Cadillac in 1981. But without electronic throttle and injection, it was a little crappy :|

The Honda Pilot 2WD uses this, but it doesn't seem to get substatially better fuel economy than the 4WD (which doesn't have it). Maybe 2 MPG improvement.

I don't think it would help us a lot either. Aerodynamics and weight are our worst enemies.

I think it could help. Most current variable displacements don't idle with cylinders shutdown for 2 reasons: 1) emmissions 2) NVH, most would complain about a miss at idle or roughness.

If, as consumers, we'd accept rough idles I think we could get some real improvements. The emmissions issue could be overcome with technology.

Apparently the Jeeps with the Hemi have this as well. I have a buddy that has one and he said he still only gets about 14mpg. Problem is, in real world driving conditions (hills, traffic, stop & go, etc.) it does not help much.
