Is this average mpg normal?

Just filled up the tank at lunch. I went 246.6 miles on the odometer and needed 17.19 gallons to fill up the tank. 14.34 mpg average. Most (~90%) of my driving is city driving. Very little on highway. Seems like it should be better than that.

There have been HUNDREDs of MPG threads on this forum, many of them are 3rd Gen specfic.

My answer: yes that is normal. I get 15-17 city/hwy.

Yep, that could be perfectly normal for the conditions you are driving in: 90% city driving, ambient temps are probably getting colder, etc.

That's normal, when it was warmer out I was getting 18-19 now I'm down to 16-17. Colder temps means longer time to warm up.

Yeah thats really bad. I average 18-20 mpg. City or highway doesn't seem to make much difference strangely. My truck is fairly modded too. I have the manual transmission which seems to make a big difference in mpg though. I've heard of many people with stock manual v6 4runners getting 22+ mpg

I see you're in Canada. Are you using the Imperial gallon, or US gallon?


OP, The reality is there are so many factors that influence MPG, that your MPG could be normal for when, where, and how you're driving.

Just an FYI, my '97 V6, 5-speed was rated by Toyota at 15 City and 19 Highway. I usually get better than that, but my entire drivetrain is using Synthetic oils and greases, and I have a freer breathing intake and exhaust.

As the saying goes: Your Mileage May Vary.

Yeap again pretty normal for city. If you mix in some highway I can get 16-17. Best so far loaded on highway has been 17.4 for me.

Its crazy how people get 2-4mpg more than what toyota states the vehicle gets which is usually higher than what they get back then. Car is rated 15 city, 16 combined and 18 hwy. My 17.4mpg is about right.

I had one bad tank my last fill up which was 14.8. I seem to be back to normal now, at about 18-19 mpg. 70/30 split city/highway.

My best was 21.9 on a tank. I had the cruise set at 75mph through the Adirondacks in NY.

Yeah, I'm aware of all the factors. I don't have a heavy foot when I drive and I realize that it's getting colder out and I am letting it warm up in the mornings before I leave. And when I searched, it seemed that most of the threads were about people bragging how great gas mileage they're getting. I just wanted to check with the experts because I haven't had my 4R very long.

I am also using full synthetic oils & greases in my entire drivetrain, spark plugs & wires are new, pcv valve is new, fuel filter is new, air filter is new, o2 sensors are new, I have a Borla muffler and Airaid intake tube. I guess with having done all that, I just expected better mpg's than what I'm getting. I can live with it though. I still need to clean the MAF & throttle body, so maybe that will make a little difference. Thanks for all the replies and sorry to post something that's been covered a million times. I really didn't want to be "that guy", but my search didn't yield much.

I base that on a 3.8 litre gallon. I typically get upwards of 450 km and my fill-ups are right around 16 gallons. I'll admit 20 mpg is a bit optimistic. I'm pretty consistently between 18.5 and 19 mpg on a fill up. This is based on the pump reading and my trip counter that I reset and record every fill-up. I also multiply by 1.03 to correct for my 265/75/16's

After I fixed a small leak in my exhaust and reset the ECU, I averaged 22-24mpg (mostly highway). Prior to fixing that issue I was down at around 17 mpg.

I don't ever do strictly "city" driving but at worst case mixed driving i'm still at around 18 mpg. I have a 2002 with 125k miles.

I'm thinking you should be getting better than 14 mpg if you are still stock wheels/tires?

Yeah, wheels & tires are stock size. I'm going to clean my throttle body & MAF sensor, & look into resetting the ECU. I've read other threads that recommended doing that, so I figure it's worth a shot

Thats was it? where was the leak? how small was it?

I filled up last night & averaged 18.2mpg last week. Mostly highway, some city with 2hrs of wheelin' on Sat. (15mph in 4wd on very easy trails) I get around 320 miles on a full tank.

17-18 city and 18-20 highway for me. Ops mpg seems pretty normal to me. Temps, using ac, driving habits and ethanol content all impact mpg.
