Is this bad?

I just wanted to know if this is bad for the tranny or 4x4 system.

I offroad in sand in 2wd until I get stuck. While stuck, I switch to 4H to get unstuck. Is that bad for the 4R? Ideally, I know you suppose to go in 4x4 but Im always intrigued on how far i can go before I get stuck.

I always see these 1 & 2 generation 4R's burrying their back tires in the sand. Im assuming they are in 2wd. Then they shift into 4x4 and climb out with ease. Just wondering if I am hurting my 4R by getting stuck first.

IMHO your ok if you feather the gas very gently until the transition to 4wd is complete (no flashing lights). I might try to coax it with very gentle fwd then reverse, once in 4wd let her rip:D

You're not hurting the tranny or t-case going from 2H to 4H or even 4L, that's what the whole thing's for.

But the sand and salt are getting into every nook and cranny, bearings, brakes, u-joints, etc, etc. Yeah, I know, you power wash it afterwards every time. That just won't get it all, and over time things will wear out and rust sooner than normal.
Ask me how I know :(

When I first got my locker I cruised everywhere as far as I could go in 2WD. Chewed up my back tires a bit, but it was fun. It's always nice having the option to shift into 4wd and pull yourself out. Being in 2wd makes it more challenging sometimes. I like to see the looks on peoples faces when I finally get out and lock my hubs after cruising through areas where most people NEED 4wd. :driving:
