Is this detonation? If not, what is it?

Hi guys,

New here. I have a V6 96 4runner, with this fairly loud "whistling" / pinging sound occurring. Here's a video I took of it.

Can you please tell me if this is a detonation problem or if anyone is familiar with the sound?

No other symptoms are present. I recently had the plugs and wires and air-intake boot replaced to solve a problem with engine stutter, but this noise existed before that repair. The air intake boot was replaced because it was cracked and not sealing due to oil contamination...

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

is that the power steering belt making the noise? its got to be something up front in the engine. along the lines of the accessorys...

Not even going to try to guess what it is by a video on this computer. what part of CA are you in?

Not detonation. It also sounds to clear in the cabin to be coming from the engine. Personally I am leaning towards transmission, sounds like it is right near you. Also you say engine hesitation, but I wonder if you are feeling something slipping in the transmission.

I am in the Bay area. This video was taken with my right window rolled down. The reason it is so loud is because the sound is reflecting off a rock wall to my right.

The engine hesitation and sound seem to be related. The noise does get more intense the harder I push the engine. If I push too hard the car will stutter... I need to take it back to the shop for that problem, as it was supposed to have been fixed.

This noise though... I gotta figure it out... I am pretty sure it is robbing me of some power... somewhere.
