Is this gonna happen to our 4Runners?

I snagged this pic of the rear wheel on my neighbor's Tacoma. He lost the center cap awhile ago.
Mine were starting to rust within 6 months so I painted them with some cheap black semi-gloss enamel brush-on. I'll try to get a pic of my paint job.

Mine were already on their way to rusting when I painted them so I could run my rig without the hub caps. My understanding is that a lot of the metal on our trucks will surface oxidize but it won't go beyond the surface as the metal itself is treated. Could be total BS but that is what I was told.

Use a rust neutralizer like Eastwood POR15 and it will last almost forever . There are a bunch of them out there and Marine supply places usually carry them or check Home Depot/Lowes.

I have little spots of rust here and there throughout the frame. I was just going to hit them with some Rustoleum. I'll have to check out the rust neutralizer you recommend. :thanks:

It's normal, nothing to worry about. Back when I had my FJCruiser, it had this. All my 4Runners past and current have similar rust so you shouldn't worry. If your neighbor hits that with a wire brush, you'll notice its just on the surface.

I'm not worried I just think it looks lame. I'd like to know why they leave it untreated. Do they get hot like a brake disc or exhaust mainfold? I hope not.

It's not going to do any damage but it looks liek crap and it doesn't hurt to paint them. I've had mine uncovered on and off fro the last 7 years and some of the paint (yes they are painted black) has come off but no rust yet since Colorado is pretty dry and rust isn't an issue.
