if someone is looking you have to jump fast if the right one comes up but prices are going nuts and you better know what to look for as far as problems with these 3rd gens. my current i called as soon as it showed up on facebook and was first one to see it with cash in hand....and he even said he had had a lot of calls since me....but he honored me being first caller, i did not try to talk him down one cent, as i knew if he balked, next guy would get it. Paid asking price of 4500. He was a transferring military guy who decided last minute not to take with him when he had to leave in less than a week.

Yeah it was even like that years before. I paid 7000 for the one I have now 8 years ago. Same deal, first caller within an hour of posting, didn't low ball as if I did the next guy would have got it. It's the exact same kind of 4Runner market now except with inflation it's twice the cost. If I sold mine now on the market I could easily ask 15K - and get it.

I stopped reading the CL ad when I got to "minor rust". Being from California, 'minor rust' always translates to SEVERE rust. 'Some rust' means vehicle is in immediate danger of disintegrating.

Wow, there were a couple for sale in Central IL at two different dealerships not too long ago for half that. Similar mileage but I think they were both 2004 IIRC.

Very true. Probably smarter to stick to my original plan of keeping it for my daughters first car.

Yep, my daughter took my old 97 off to college and is still driving it, she is 35 now, maybe 275,00 miles or so. Just reupholstered it with new leather from Richmond Auto Upholstery, who were just awesome (Hansen was the guy). These things go forever. Easy to work on. Reliable. Bulletproof.

I couldn't sell my '99 Limited for my lower asking price of $4500. So as a joke I listed it for $2,000 to see if I'd get any bites. Got a TON of "interested" people. All 24 people who came all said.... "I wish it was in better condition. The paint looks sand blasted, and even though it doesn't leak, I can see the valve cover gaskets are leaking, and the drivers seat cushion needs replacing..." Run and drives fine, but people were ALL hung up on cosmetics. It's interesting how many people expect to buy a pre-owned vehicle that in BOLD letters states... FIXER UPPER, RUNS and DRIVES GREAT, but has some cosmetic issues, and still how they want it to be perfect. So now... I'll spend the several grand to fix it up, get a paint job and sell it in the $7,000-9,000 price range. Or keep it. Frustrating, but it is what it is.

Damn that's nuts. I don't really want to get rid of my runner but if he gets even close to asking that's really tempting..

And to get what? Every car on the market is inflated now. IF the 3rd gens are selling for so high, there is a reason, You'll probably won't get any better in the trade off, IMO you'll surely downgrade quite a bit. Even if your 4runner was in mint-perfect condition so you could get this ''kind'' of price, it's still a lot of a better truck than many things these days that you could buy much newer. You'd be better off keeping the mint-perfect 4runner.

Sell the 4runner - get big monies - still spend a lot on another vehicle - miss the 4runner - whine to people how you miss the 4runner

FZJ80 prices are a different game altogether. If the condition is as good as claimed, it could easily fetch 25k plus. There is a guy out there who will pay it.

You're comparing the FZJ80 market with UZJ100 market. Different beast.
