That bolt is magnetic — it's supposed to catch that stuff.

I haven't pulled enough to know whether your has excessive buildup or not, but mine had some as well when I swapped fluids last. Some amount is to be expected though.

That looks normal to me. I just drained mine and the fluid was pretty dark and had a similar amount of metallic sludge on it.

The key is if there are metal chunks or shavings. If it is super fine metallic sludge like in that picture, that is totally normal. Fill it back up and call it a day...

Looks like about what i had on my drain plug and on my friends 99 that we recently did a drain and fill on...maybe not quite as much of the thick paste but kinda close.

Shes bout to hit 288k
the fluid still looked kinda clean pouring out I was surprised.
thanks for assuring me that this is normal
I can put my mine at ease now
I slaped everything back together
now I just gotta do the front and tcase
the rear bolts came out pretty easy thanks to days of pb blaster

I was going to change my front fluid but the fluid literally looked brand new. Plus I couldn't get the drain plug to budge and I didn't want to pump it out through the fill. Since the front gets only a fraction of use, changing it not nearly as important as the rear.

Is that true, that the front diff is disengaged when in 2WD?

I thought the 4WD system was like my Dodge Ram where the front hubs, axles, diff, and driveshaft were all engaged full time and 4WD/2WD disconnect was entirely in the transfer case.
