been searching for a good v6 4wd 4th gen since january. hv seen a lot, both most times something is off..maybe price, mileage, maintainance record, v6/v8..or distance.

so i found this one today about 135k miles,v6 4wd, 2004 titanuim silver [exact color i want!], sports hood, good maintaiance records both carfax and toyota, listed price is $10990. is this a good price.also do all sport models have xreas?..if yes..how do i check if the xreas system of this particula one is bad?..how easy is it to remove the whole xreas system and install normal shocks?..am asking this against sometime in the future, when the xreas may go bad.

note: the toyota maintainace records shows only oil and filter change, battery, spark plug change/test..no major repair work done going by the maintainance records....is this usual/ok?

The price depends on your location, condition of the suv, and what you can actually buy it for.

Most sport models do have xreas on them. It is not hard to change that system over to a traditional set up.

The one thing I didn't hear you say that needs to be done if it hasn't is the timing belt/chain. (please forgive me I just woke up and can't remember which the V6 has) that service alone is $500+ and needs to be done at 100,000 miles.

Over all it sounds like a good deal. And if you can use the timing repair to lower the price, even better. Also with it being 4wd check the cb bands and boots.

Price looks fair to me, considering history. Make sure all body parts have vin stickers(hood, fenders, hatch doors), just to rule out any extensive body work that could have been done without being reported.

If you are skilled enough to change shocks on a non XREAS 4runner, then you should have no trouble removing XREAS system. Keep in mind, my 04 XREAS has 172k miles and is still working fine and leak free.

Since the V6 has a timing chain, dont expect much more then the oil changes, spark plugs. May want to check condition of accessory belt.

Hope this one works out for you.

@northga4r...its a v6, thus it has a timing chain, hv been on the forum for some months now, so picked up a couple of things.thanks

@im4u2mvs...thanks for all the points you mentioned, will go through them.the car is in baltimore.good to hear about ur 4runner hitting 172k miles n the xreas still intact.you said its a fair deal, and not a good deal?..what would be a good deal?....will the prices of used cars get lower as summer approaches..or is the reverse the case?

saw a limited 04 4runner 102k miles v8 listed for $11400, the deal breaker for me was the v8....heard a lot about the 2 - 5mpg extra consumption.

hope to seal the deal by wkend,..so pls keep the suggestions and comments coming :)

Its not a bad deal if in good condition. As far as V6 vs V8, it is only about 2 mpg difference. Have you driven a V8? I would have taken that Limited over the one you are looking at for sure. IMO the V8 is a super sweet engine and worth the 2 mpg loss any day. . . . . it is that great of an engine.

earthrelm-

looks like a pretty good deal from what I have seen.

BTW where did you see the v8 model limited for 11,400. That is what I am looking for... :hunter:

lol..guess i might be reviewing my v6/v8 buying decision, seems most folks here think the v8 limited option at $11400 is a better deal than the v6 i have in mind the 3mpg mileage drop and other maintainace issues, not withstanding.
here is the link to the v8.i hv till weekend to make up my mind.its best for another forum member to get the car, than we all loose it :sobbing:

Well What is the condition of this 2004 t4r?It always depends on the condition of the car if it is in fair price.

baltimore suggest its seen the salt life pretty hard. Its a good price but if frame or suspension componants are rusted bad you'll be doing some extra maintance. when i was trying to decide between V6 or V8 i just went an test drove both to see which i liked best. I loved the ride of the V8 its nice to have the extra power when you need it plus normal driving theres hardly any difference in mpgs the V6 will get you to the next gas station down the road instead of the first one lol. I wanted the SE cause of the hood scoop just had trouble finding one i wanted wound up with an 03 limited V8 and the only regret i get when i see an SE is i dont have the scoop but its not functional anyway and i can always find one later on used if i have to break down and get one lol. Only negative I've found in the V8 are less performance modifications are available compared to the V6, and if you get into regearing for bigger tires and heavy offroad adventures the V6 has more gearing options available, lockers, true tracs, etc.. but thats all driver preferance you may care less about offroading...

@aha2988...yeah..am not into offroading., no towing....so the truck will be kept stock.yeah baltimore is among the salt states, so am gonna be checking for rust.the v8 looks a bit rusted, from the pics.yes i love the hood scoop, though it aint a deal breaker for me..i intend to use the truck as a daily office commute..averaging about 20miles daily, since my office is close to home..plus the occasional 150mile trick every 2 months or so.......thats why i feel the v8 wouldn't be of any use to me.

saw a store doing a rebate on parts, thinking of using the oppurtunity to stock up on parts, which parts are prone to failure the most...am thinking of suspension parts - tierods, ball joints, bearing&hub assy etc...is my assumption right?...thanks

You'll notice zero difference in MPG between the V6 and V8 on just regular comutes and highway trips. there is .7L difference in cu. in. of the motors over two extra cylinders thats not a noticable difference at all.

brake calipers are prone to seizing.

cv boots can tare and lose cv greese causing cv axle (half shaft) failure.

All urathane suspension bushings are prone to wear and become weak overtime causing a little added body roll theres complete kits to replace them all (sway bar, UCA's F/R, LCA's F/R, Rear sway bar, and pan hard bar as well as the ball joint end links of the sway bars) if you want a tip top ride.

keep throttle body clean (inside)

clean the MAF mass airflow sensor

clean air filter, keep driveshafts greesed properly, and oil changes and you should be good check all hoses for cracks or leaks. and enjoy your 4runner. oh the A/C compressor relay (the factory one not autostore version) seems to go out on these things so if the a/c light on the temp control settings panel starts flashing check the relay before assuming the compressors gone bad.

V6 comon issues: head gasket failure (lost of documented cases)
v8 comon issues: exhaust manifold crack (rare)
water pump leak (rare)
timing belt slippage (rare)

Sounds like a fair price for both trucks you listed. Personally, I would choose the V8 for the great power and reliability. Although the V6 is a great engine too, there have been a few head gasket issues to be aware of. With the V8, the biggest thing has been manifolds cracking (not as big as HG, but still a big bill). You should be happy with either engine you choose.

BTW, ever figure out what you're doing with the RAV4? :D

If that was true then they wouldn't have stopped putting the V8 into the new 4Runners. Also, physics the way we know it would cease to exist. 2 extra cylinders are going to use more gas. There's no way around it.

The exhaust manifold crack is WAY more common of a problem than the head gasket.

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/93178-exhaust-manifold-leak-tick.html

Also, I've seen the water pump leak reported on both the V6 and the V8. I don't think it's any more common on one than the other. Either way when it happens it sucks and is expensive to fix.

Edit: Wanted to add that I think the manifold crack is more prevalent in the salt states. So if you look at those be sure to have it inspected by someone who knows what they're looking for.

Double edit: It may be the rapid cooling of the headers that causes the problems, not the salt. But whatever the reason it seems more prevalent in places with cold winters.

yes theres two more cylinders but the diameter of all 8 cylinders is smaller than the diameter of the cylinders in the V6. theres only .7L more combustion chamber space in the V8. Its not about the number of cylinders its about the size of the cylinders in the engine. The 5.9l cummins diesle measures in (rounded off) at 350 cu. in. with 6 cylinders. the V6 is 4.0L the V8 is 4.7L
other example the dodge viper V10 measures in at 8.0L (488 cu. in.)compared to a chevy crate motor 502 cu. in. V8 the 502 V8 is gonna suck more gas than the 8.0L V10

yes the 4.7L engine will use more gas at full throttle than the 4.0l V6 at full throttle; however, with power to weight ratio difference's durring normal dailly responsible driving there's not gonna be any consumption differences noticable enough to matter your talking milligrams of fuel differences

edit: toyota discontinued there 4.7's and went to a 4.6L you can research the reasons if your interested, theres no clear reason as to why they didnt offer the V8 drivetrain in the new 4runners other than the assumption the cost effectivness of maintaining both drive trains, ever notice how hard it is to get the right brake caliper from a parts store or other similar replacement parts, toyota developed so many trim packages, drivetrain's, and suspension options in there 4th gens they surely became overwhelmed with diagnosing design failures and keeping up with every different kind of 4runner they offered. and i think we all know how much of a PITA it is to make sure we get the right parts for our different 4runner setups. I would believe they wanted to simplify the market and just offer one drivetrain with different trim/suspension options.

To get from 4.0 to 4.7 you have increase roughly 17%. Sorry man, there's just no way you can get the same gas mileage if the other variables like maintenance, driving style, etc are the same.

no appologies necessary i was happy with my 21-22mpg's out of my V8 before i added all my upgrades and now still happy with getting 17-18mpgs with stock gears and 33" tires. I'd also like to add that the V8 4wd's are full time AWD so the front axels always pushing and the V8's still knock on the V6's mpg's door all day long.

edit: which reminds me they run a 3.9 final drive ratio in the V6's and a 3.7 final drive in the V8's perhaps that could keep the mpg's so close with the 17% increase you speak of. which a 17% increase btw: .7 litters = .18 gallons so the displacement can only move about 3 more cups fuel at full throttle than the V6.

I'd be very cautious with rust. I picked up my 05 SE with 20k, and now at 39, almost 40k, my xreas is giving me sag to the driver front. I'm replacing with bilsteins soon.

Keep an eye out for stuff like this

Good luck!!

You should drive that rusty truck up here to NH and give it a treatment with the chainsaw oil rust service. I just did it to mine and judging by the looks of yours you need it even more! It costs 130.00 bucks and takes over an hour to perform service. Do it next year as well, and then every other year afterwards if u plan on keeping it for a while and not having it rust out. Give me a call and I'll tell ya about it603.463.9950

Wow, I cant believe your still lookin and have not found one yet. The deal you found seems to be about right. My 04 silver with the V8 and 147K was purchased for 9,000.00 a couple of months ago with new tires. There is a new one on NH craigslist today, an 04 dark blue limited with the V6 with 106K and new tires from an original owner for 11,800. That sounds pretty good too with the leather beige seats.
