is this price good for a 2004 t4r?

The 4.7 V8 is as smooth as glass. It's worth a small bit less mpg.

Fully agree. I drove both the V6 and V8 before purchasing and it was an easy decision after having done so. The difference in MPG is negligible. I have an FJ Cruiser as well with the 4.0 V6 and it only gets maybe 1 mpg better than the 4Runner and it is not AWD like the 4Runner.

You should drive that rusty truck up here to NH and give it a treatment with the chainsaw oil rust service. I just did it to mine and judging by the looks of yours you need it even more! It costs 130.00 bucks and takes over an hour to perform service. Do it next year as well, and then every other year afterwards if u plan on keeping it for a while and not having it rust out. Give me a call and I'll tell ya about it603.463.9950

Will do tomorrow! Thanks.

It never ceases to amaze me how many folks always chime-in whenever a buyer is looking at a V6 to rationalize why they're happy with a V8 and why everyone should get a V8. It's silly.

It's a matter of personal preference and best left at that, since each engine & accompanying drivetrain has well-documented opinions that are readily available to said prospective buyer. Both are great engines and drivetrains, each has its Achilles' heel there isn't one clear winner.

For a little more power, sure, go for the V8. But the tradeoff will be crappier mileage. How much crappier (or how much better the V6 gets) depends almost entirely on driving style. A leadfoot might as well get the V8 because trying to jackrabbit a V6 will probably make it get substantially worse mileage than the V8 under those demands. A hypermiler in a V6, though, can make the V8 look like a gas hog by comparison. The right choice? The one that fits one's driving style.

Anyway...

I'd be primarily worried about the rust on a truck with over 100k miles. Corrosion just makes every little job an ordeal, and that's getting to the mileage where more and more things are going to need to be replaced.

I'd look closely at the frame for signs of rust (the deep rot, not superficial surface rust), and inside it for signs of sand & dirt accumulation. Also see if the skid plates are all bashed-up. If the truck only left the pavement once in a while, it's not going to be as much of a headache as if it was crashed and thrashed around offroad or driven over rough gravel roads on a daily basis, in which case it might need a whole lot of corrective work, including work on steering, alignment, bushings, ball joints, etc..

XREAS is more things to go wrong, but sounds like it's really nice when it is working correctly. I'd bet it would be really obvious if it was failing, the truck would probably handle like utter crap.

The price point doesn't seem too bad to me, assuming it's in as good of condition as it sounds. Dealer or private party? If a dealer, I'd go over everything super carefully, they buy from auctions and won't 'fess-up even if they know a trade had needed a lot of cleaning-up to make it look as if it hadn't been run into the ground. At least a private party might be able to give you an honest assessment of how they'd driven and cared for it, and may talk too much to make sure they don't have a guilty conscience over selling to you.

Wow, I cant believe your still lookin and have not found one yet. The deal you found seems to be about right. My 04 silver with the V8 and 147K was purchased for 9,000.00 a couple of months ago with new tires. There is a new one on NH craigslist today, an 04 dark blue limited with the V6 with 106K and new tires from an original owner for 11,800. That sounds pretty good too with the leather beige seats.

thinking of selling the 4.2 rav4 and getting a 4.3 ravvy 4 wifey.the folks @rav4world rock!!!!.

too bad nh is too far for me, am constrained by my job.restricted my search to a 60mile raduis...guess am too picky/hv a tight budget..thats y i am yet to buy a truck since jan!..seeing a silver/ash/gray v6 4wd 04/05 less than 115k miles and less than $11k aint so easy..a forumite here is selling his 05 runner with 108k miles..wants 13500 for it....wch is about $1500 more than what am ready to spend.

i am coming from a 4.2 rav4 2.0l I4 car.so i know the v6 4.0l runner wud more than blow me away.i intend to go over the car with a fine comb!....from the included carfax ..it seems the owner serviced the truck @ the stealership and then traded in the car at the same stealership...as all the service records were carried out there...this is a good sign i guess?...if the mileage was around 100k..i would hv been more than happy..the present 135k is giving me a lil more concern wch am trying to quell with the 'good' service records

I honestly don't think the 135k miles is a big concern if it has been babied & properly maintained, and it looks like it may well have been babied (all the cosmetic upgrades are probably a good sign that someone cared for it). If the dealer has the records & is willing to share, verify that the coolant and transmission fluid were changed on schedule. If the mechanical and underbody areas are as sound as the bodywork and interior look, I think that's a great price, and the dealer probably has room for negotiation.

I agree with this. From the pictures it does look well maintained. If you haven't done it already take the VIN and go register it at the Toyota Owners website. You'll be able to look over the service records with some notes. Might be better than what the dealer has already shared with you.

I also agree that's a pretty good price and there's probably more negotiation room. Even so, I would bring it to an independent mechanic and have it looked over just for peace of mind.

Only negative I've found in the V8 are less performance modifications are available compared to the V6, and if you get into regearing for bigger tires and heavy offroad adventures the V6 has more gearing options available, lockers, true tracs, etc.. but thats all driver preferance you may care less about offroading…

ummm excuse me but do the v8 4Runner's have different rear axles or front diff's? because engine displacement has jack **** to do with final drive ratios (save for what is available from the factory)

from what I've researched my truck has a different driveline set up than the v6's I'm still digging to find all the differences. I mean obviously the v6's have a 2WD option on there 4wd's and the V8 4wd's dont. But i have an 8" ring gear front/rear with 3.73 final drive ratio from the factory. I've been told the V6's have a 3.9 final drive ratio and I'm uncertain of there ring size it may be 8" as well. but every time i look up carriers for my truck and ring/pinion sets all i can find is "ring/pinion for toytota 8" IFS clamshell V6" "arb air locker for toyota 8" IFS clamshell front diff V6" maybe its just a different bolt pattern on the ring gear or a different pinion shaft but say for instance you can take an Elocker from an FJ the whole third member will just bolt right in place on the V6 rear axel I can't do that on mine this is strickly what I've been informed through questioning regearing my truck If you know of any different info my ears are wide opened

That would be something that I would like to find out. The driveline differences I would think would only be the transfer case being full time on the v8 an part time on the v6. But that doesn't effect the axle ratios unless they are in fact different axles, but that wouldn't make sense for Toyota to produce vehicle specific axles just for the v8 option.

I didnt think it made since either. I'm getting up with a good friend of mine thats the service tech manager at scott clarks today hopefully to go through and dig out what info i can about A.) what kind of differences my driveline has compared to a V6 B.) why im getting different performances offroad (between reverse & forward driving I think i talked to you about that in a different thread). hopefully i can shed some light on my regearing plans and get some p/n's nailed down to get ordered.

sorry to the OP to be off topic btw.

I recall that thread, forgot about that. I hope you get it fingered out.

/off topic

Back on topic if the vehicle is in good working condition I'd say it's a good price. I paid $13,000 for my 2004 v8 SR5 with 90,000 miles on it. I might have over paid though, but the interior and drivetrain looked spotless and had service records.

I see a big difference from buying from a Toyota Dealership versus buying from a Used Car Dealership called Famous Amos or whatever the name of the dealership is in Chantilly, VA. I think you get the best cars at the Toyota Dealership and you get the best deals from private owners. I stay away from Used Car lots.

I really like the looks of the Limited and I prefer the V8, but I tow a boat with mine. My son in law had a SR5 with a V6 and he said there is no comparison with what he had to what I have with the Limited V8. Said he would have kept his had it driven like mine does.

@JIMKW..yeah.you are spot on on your analysis///the car dealers buy from private parties n auctions, detail the cars a bit and the mark up for profit...being searching on CL and ebay for months now..hvnt seen a runner that i like/want that is close to my warchest :).the major problem with private party sales is that initially everyone places ahigh value on their car(s)...i understand the feeling.............and so they list the car at a very high price..its after a few weeks of the car being unsold that that they realize that their car aint special...and they reduce the price, but by then folks like me are long gone.

the v8 is real sweet....am sorely tempted to go for it..not withstanding it being called a gas hog..am still weighing my options.
i searched on toyota website and the younger cars [where the v6 is listed] is listed as a toyota dealership.the few preowned trucks i saw on toyota site were also $2k to $4k higher than the other trucks i have being seeing

How far you willing to travel and how much you willing to spend?

Here is one in Uniontown, PA which is probably about 4 hours from you. Private owner asking $12,500. It's a V6, but it is a Limited. I would offer him $10,000 and see where it goes from there.

http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...l=all&minPrice=5000&listingId=321530498&Log=0

I got mine with 95K on it last June for $10,500 and the owner was asking $12,500. I offered her $10K and we settled at $10,500. I think I got a fantastic deal.

Here is a sample of a spreadsheet I put together when looking at cars:

I could not attach it as excel so I converted it to .txt. If you save it to your disk, you should be able to open with excel. I used the excel 2003 format vs the 2007 format. Hope it works.

This data is from more than a year ago, so the data is old, but you get the idea.

wow..both trucks are real good too.

the downside for the first truck is distance.....i am constrained by my job, restricting my search to a 60mile radius [from 21202].

the 2nd truck is excellent, the downsides being that its a v8....will see if the seller will be willing to part with it for $10~ .

am willing to spend as much as $11k~ for an excellent well maintained less than 130k miles truck..preferably v6,hood scoop, 04/05 model..though these extras aint a game changer'

95k miles and $10500?!...thats a fantastic deal

thanks for the links!

There are quite few scratches from a cat all over mine. That's why I got such a good deal. I made a real big deal over them when I looked at it to buy, now I can barely see them. I did quite a bit to rub them out the best I could.

The lady I bought it from was an Anesthesiologist and I swear she had more money than she knew what to do with. She had a brand new Suburan to pull her camper and she drove a brand new big Harley and her partner drove a new Minivan. And they had just put an inground pool in the back yard.

I had just bought the BMW and was not really looking for one, but was just keeping my eyes open. When I saw it I could not pass it up for that price. Not crazy about the color, but it's growing on me. Love the dark grey like that one in Fairfax, VA.
